Hello and welcome to my blog!
Splinterlands is one of the most popular web3 games on Hive and in general with many active players and every once in a while, I get asked by new players to give some tips and bits of advice on how to start their Splinterlands journey. Well, this week's social media challenge is about that only- sharing some tips for new players. If you want to read the challenge post, click here. I will share some of my journey here along with some general tips that will help a lot of players.
Splinterlands is a strategy trading Card game which allows the players to battle against real players and each battle poses some challenges tough decisions to take, and one must build a good lineup with the limited resources and constraints provided in the battle and come out on top. Due to a large number of available abilities and the unique cards present in the game, it is not an easy game to master and becomes overwhelming for beginners.
Looking for Help?
Discord is full of interesting communities where you can have both fun and learn at the same time and there are a lot of splinterlands-related discords including the official SPL discord server. They have useful guides, frequently asked questions and staff members available to help you with any type of queries. Even if you don't need help just staying and involving in those servers will help you make new friends and have a good time in general. There are a lot of helpful veterans of the game ready to help you with your splinterlands journey.
Not just on Discord, there are other social media platforms and forums where you can get help, one of my personal favorites is Youtube where I started my learning journey and that was a big step forward for that's how I got to know the awesome community on Discord. Some people prefer telegram or/and WhatsApp too.
Join Events and Tournaments
Events and Tournaments are organised daily which can help you earn some extra rewards if you are up to the task. They tend to get competitive so be warned to face some tough competition in those. Expect to lose a lot of games too but analysing these losses will help you get familiar with the meta of the game and how the top competitive players make their strategies. You can copy the strategies and see if they work for you. You either win or you learn, there is no losing here!
I can't stress enough to apply and join a guild, especially when someone is new to the game. A good guild will not only help you take on the brawl fights and earn extra rewards but they will also teach you to become more competitive and you will get better and get help from your guildmates on strategies and card combinations.
Play to learn, not just Play to Win
I have talked about this a lot of times to a lot of beginners and it's not just applicable to this game but with other web3 games too. If you focus too much on the rewards and outputs you will not be able to get efficient learning. Just like more things focus on the process and learning one thing at a time and improving on it, it can be learning just one good strategy at a time or knowing the strengths and weaknesses of just a few cards but focusing on learning. At first, you will be bound to lose more than you win and it is fine as long as you can identify what made you lose that specific battle. Each loss is an opportunity to do better and learn from it. And the rewards will come in naturally.
My entry into Splinterlands!
Getting into a new game is always a big challenge, especially when it is a big strategic card game like splinterlands with so much to offer and learn. Like many newbies, I faced some challenges of my own too. I had no one to get help from at first as I was not referred by anyone and kind of found this game on my own through a Google search. I had no idea where to ask for help and learned a lot from online resources like watching some YouTube videos and guides. But once I found the posts on Hive blockchain about this game and it all started to get easier and easier. I could read other people's strategies and take a few things from them. I have shared my splinterlands journey many times but it would still be helpful to share them again here!
It all started to get a lot better when I joined the splinterlands discord and found a few helpful people who shared their own experiences of the game and shared a lot of helpful advice. This shows the power of community building!
Another challenge I faced was the lack of funds to spend on buying and renting cards which got taken care of when I started to blog about the game on HIVE and that fixed a lot of problems for me. So, yeah... blogging can be a good source so you can invest back your earnings into the game and grow your account.
Let's end with summarising and putting everything neatly in bullet points here:
- Practice, practice and practice (There is no shortcut to this, you just have to play the game for longer)
- Join communities on discords, telegrams, Hive etc (If you are reading this, you have joined at least one of them. Explore more!)
- Share your experience with others and blog on Hive. Also, take part in challenges like this (When you write and explain your strategies you will understand it much better, just try it.)
- Don't get too attached to the result of the game and focus more on learning the strategies (As I said before, focus on the process not just on the results)
- Rent your way up if you can't afford to buy cards (No need to buy a $150 card just rent them for much cheaper and see if it helps)
- If you are feeling frustrated just take a rest and come back again the next day. Don't push too much, you will end up losing more!
- Watch replays and don't skip them (Especially when you are trying new strategies and units)
- Go to the help section of Splinterlands website and read all the resources!
- Take part in tournaments and other challenges.
- Join a Guild and play Brawls, which will help you get extra rewards.
- Make friends and HAVE FUN! (This is the most important of them all)
