Extraordinary Ostrich

Bigger Can Be Better

South African Black Ostrich (Struthio camelus domesticus) there are a few southern ostrich subspecies, more detailed here Ostriches

South African Black is widely farmed for its meat, eggs and feathers which are of higher quality to the subspecies, also endemic to South Africa.

Nutrients in this meat provides iron, vitamins B12 and B6, riboflavin, thiamin, selenium, niacin, zinc, and phosphorus. Tasty many describe between beef or pork, it is red meat although poultry and hold higher nutritional value to chicken or turkey meat, I buy ostrich regularly to me it holds a slightly wild meat flavour I do enjoy. Steak, goulash, mince, sausages (wors) or burgers it is quick and easy to cook, loaded with great taste.

Skins are dried used for shoes, handbags, wallets and an array of fashionable items, strong yet comfortably thin. Feathers another in fashion design, not up to scratch in fashion will be used making feather dusters.

Eggs, this I tried when young and never had the opportunity to buy one again, Dad purchased one egg I would estimate it is equivalent to about two dozen chicken eggs. We made omelette, baked cakes and biscuits from that one egg it fed the family of six comfortably. Dad drilled holes on each end to allow the egg to drain out.

Curios sell painted in great decoupage like the one I have, known to be carved onto as far back at the 17th century, or painted to use in churches dating even earlier in time. Tribes living on the land store water in them like a flask, shell is often cut then crafted into effective kitchenware, as bowls and drinking cups.

As the worlds largest flightless bird, believe me they know how to run, kick and protect themselves. On some farms they have ostrich races where staff have learned to ride them, similar to the horse track these guys really take this sport quite serious.

Hope you enjoyed these extraordinary birds we see them on farms or in the wild here in South Africa never treat them with disrespect they are wild birds that live in flocks. Think about it; "A frightened ostrich can achieve a speed of 72.5 kilometers (45 miles) per hour. If cornered, it can deliver dangerous kicks capable of killing lions."

I must admit was pleasantly surprised the first time I had ostrich meat. I love game birds as they have much more flavour than chicken etc.
They are huge, I have only seen in captivity.
That curio is absolutely gorgeous! I loved the map with the animals and had the elephant where I first encountered in the wild in Gabon!

Ostrich meat I thoroughly enjoy at least once a week. Researched and found a place where one is able to buy an egg for R85 (US$4.5), never seen it in shops this would be a direct purchase from the farm. Vaguely remember the taste was quite good, although the smell not so much...

Oh now I will be watching to see if you go get an egg!

Would be interesting to try again, who knows....

Makes one think, living in difficult regions why not farms these great birds which sound easier to farm than cattle.

Such a big ostrich! The benefits are quite numerous

Able to use most everything from the bird one could enjoy farming with them.

Woow, this is really so big ostrich.
Sending Love and Ecency Vote!

These were in a game reserve, they are majestic big birds to watch.

Good morning dear friend @joanstewart how are you?

What a beautiful bird, it is undoubtedly an extraordinary specimen

I did not know that ostriches were raised for their meat, I was unaware of this information

I also had the experience of trying a potato omelette made with ostrich eggs, it is very delicious

Have a great weekend

Many farms will have a few roaming free, down in the Cape arid region (Karoo or Little Karoo) is where the farming takes place. Easier to raise than cattle some of the farms are well worth visiting where they offer tours.

That kind of bird truly look dangerous. I won't dare go near them. I heard they chase people haha.. they look heavy and could knock out one, lol.

This kind of bird looks dreadful. Won't it attack someone?

It will attack to protect, so don't scare them they are wild.

Such a bird is a big curiosity in Russia. I read that there are even ostriches farms, but that was at least 10 years ago. I have not read such news for a long time and have not seen ostrich meat in the store.

@joanstewart, Maybe it's time for me to come to South Africa? 😂😂😂

The birds brought in large income in the early part of the last century, fourth highest in commodity after gold. South Africa at this time were the only farming, now Ostrich farms began to spread gradually to other countries, particularly Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Argentina, bird is able to withstand extremely high temperatures. Like camels able to move over large distances searching for water.

Should you ever come visit you would be most welcome, keep to rural regions, city life is far more dangerous !LOLZ

Wow most definitely no records broken, over eight years not too bad with real life carrying on. Thanks @hivebuzz for notification, have an awesome new week.

That's a great achievement, @joanstewart! Consistency is key, and balancing real life with online activity is no small feat. Keep up the good work and enjoy your journey. Have an nice week as well! 🚀✨

Oh, it is extraordinary bird for so many reasons. I am impressed about the size of the eggs. I recall someone told me trying to crash an ostrich egg by jumping on top of it, but without success.
Thank you very much for your entry!

Not easy to get into the shell, drilling into either end then dripping out into a large jar is the only method I have seen.

I have never had a Ostrich meat, these are some of the things I missed out on when I was in SA though it was all about trying to survive and not really having the spare money to explore and enjoy.

!PIZZA

Meat is available in most stores here, never seen the egg. While in NZ you must be on the lookout for kangaroo meat in stores, that is tasty as well.

!WINEX

I have had a deer 🦌 here, quite nice I will have to eat Kangaroo as well, just haven't find out where yet.

!PIZZA

Normally in supermarkets, makes a good stew.

Such an extraordinary bird!
!INDEED

In every way.

They're quite big, but I'm not surprised to know how nutritious and tasty they are.

Simply delicious to enjoy on the plate, brilliant to see when outdoors witnessing them in the wild.

I have never eaten ostrich, it must be a mental block, or just being a selective eater, Iam not very adventurous with food. Just thinking what a breakfast fry up would look like with one of their eggs fitted onto the plate. ( i don't eat eggs either, yeuch)

Should you ever come across it again, give it a try it will surprise!

hmm!!!!!!

A unique bird that I have never met in person.

Hopefully I can find it, friend.

Most welcome!❤️

I can just imagine the strength of their legs! Cool birds.
I heard that one can make a whole bunch of omelette from their huge eggs, but unfortunately I haven't tried it yet :)

They are amazing birds to watch, very capable of looking after themselves out in the wild.

Oh, I have no doubt about it! Flightless birds, they take their speed, mass and strength.

Never seen one stand with it's head in the sand either.....
