Chapter 19: The Bridge of Souls
They had passed through the Gates.
Behind them, the world was slowly closing, swallowed by the Mists like a memory sinking into oblivion. Ahead stretched a path no mortal had walked since the collapse of the original Pact:
The Bridge of Souls.
It was neither stone nor wood. It was woven from light, forged of embodied memories. Each step echoed like a heartbeat in eternity, and beneath their feet, the void wasn’t black — it shimmered with fleeting images: forgotten faces, ancient battles, whispered oaths in long-lost tongues.
Fyrael led the way, his features tense. He felt the weight of the fragment pulsing against his chest, growing stronger. The blade at his hip vibrated with a strange, almost painful frequency.
Behind him, the fragment bearers followed, silent. No one dared speak. For here, even the whisper of a thought could awaken a memory… or a nightmare.
Midway across, the bridge widened into a vast, floating platform, circular and ringed by arches of glowing mist. There stood a figure.
Sélénéa.
Or rather... a version of her.
Her body was translucent, like crystalized memory. Her eyes were calm, but deep as the void between stars.
— “I’m not her,” she said gently, sensing their confusion. “I am her echo, guardian of the passage.”
Fyrael stepped forward. His voice was hoarse.
— “Where is she?”
— “Between the heartbeats of the world. Where the debt of the Secret awaits recognition.”
Around them, the arches lit up. Twelve symbols appeared, each representing one of the ancient realms.
— “You must choose.”
— “Only one of you will pass through to the Final Altar. The others… will remain to seal the bridge.”
Silence fell like a blade.
A wave of fear, then acceptance, moved through the bearers.
One by one, they touched their fragment, then the bridge.
The tattooed giant was the first. Then the white-haired shadow weaver. Then the child, without a word.
Each, in linking to the bridge, became stone, memory, and light.
They did not die.
They became the bond.
At last, Fyrael looked up at Sélénéa’s echo.
— “And me?”
— “You carry the will of the Accord. Go.”
The path reshaped itself — narrow, blazing.
In the distance floated an immense structure:
The Final Altar, forged from the ivory of dead stars, pulsing like an ancient heart.
Fyrael took one last breath.
Then he walked, alone, toward the fate of Velorn.
Chapitre 19 : Le Pont des Âmes
Ils avaient franchi les Portes.
Derrière eux, le monde se refermait lentement, avalé par les Brumes comme un souvenir englouti. Devant eux s’étendait un chemin que nul mortel n’avait foulé depuis l’effondrement du Pacte originel : le Pont des Âmes.
Il n’était ni pierre ni bois. Il était fait de lumière tissée, de souvenirs incarnés. Chaque pas résonnait comme un battement de cœur dans l’éternité, et sous leurs pieds, le vide n’était pas noir, mais empli d’images fugaces — visages oubliés, batailles anciennes, serments chuchotés dans des langues perdues.
Fyrael marchait en tête, les traits tendus. Il sentait le poids du fragment pulser contre sa poitrine, de plus en plus fort. La lame à sa ceinture vibrait d'une fréquence étrange, presque douloureuse.
Derrière lui, les porteurs suivaient, silencieux. Aucun n'osait parler. Car ici, même le murmure d’une pensée pouvait réveiller un souvenir… ou un cauchemar.
À mi-parcours, le pont s’élargit en une vaste plateforme flottante, circulaire, cernée par des arcs de brume luminescente. Là, se dressait une silhouette.
Sélénéa.
Ou plutôt... une version d’elle.
Son corps était translucide, comme sculpté dans du cristal de mémoire. Ses yeux étaient calmes, mais profonds comme l'abîme du ciel nocturne.
— « Ce n’est pas moi, » dit-elle doucement, devinant leur trouble. « Je suis son écho, gardienne du passage. »
Fyrael s’avança. Sa voix était rauque.
— « Où est-elle ? »
— « Entre les battements du monde. Là où la dette du Secret attend d’être reconnue. »
Autour d’eux, les arches s’illuminèrent. Douze symboles y apparurent, chacun représentant un royaume ancien.
— « Vous devez faire choix. »
— « Un seul d’entre vous traversera jusqu’à l’Autel Final. Les autres... resteront pour sceller le pont. »
Le silence fut coupant.
Une onde de peur, puis de résignation, traversa les porteurs.
Un par un, ils posèrent la main sur leur fragment, puis sur le sol du pont.
Le géant tatoué fut le premier. Puis la femme aux cheveux blancs. Puis l’enfant, sans un mot. Chacun, en se liant au pont, en devenait pierre, mémoire et lumière.
Ils ne mouraient pas.
Ils devenaient le lien.
Enfin, Fyrael leva les yeux vers l’écho de Sélénéa.
— « Et moi ? »
— « Tu portes la volonté de l’Accord. Va. »
Le chemin se reforma, étroit et flamboyant.
Au loin, une immense structure flottait dans le vide : l’Autel Final, forgé dans l’ivoire d’étoiles mortes, battant comme un cœur ancien.
Fyrael prit une dernière inspiration.
Puis il marcha, seul, vers le destin de Velorn.
