Professional Food Thiefs

in Feathered Friends2 months ago

Western Gulls are sleek, dark-backed masters of the air. They can be found year-round from British Columbia down to Baja California, where my daughter-in-law took these photos. They are the most common large gull on almost every pier and beach in California. We don't see them here in the Midwest.

While they primarily eat fish and drop hard-shelled prey like clams or sea urchins from high altitudes onto rocks to break them open.

Western Gulls are professional food thieves. They are highly intelligent and have adapted to see humans as a reliable food source.
They don't just wait for scraps; they often plan their "heists."They usually attack from behind or the side to stay out of your line of sight. They are more likely to target an item if they see a person actively handling or eating it, as it signals the item is high-quality food.
Sometimes they work in pairs—one gull will distract you or land nearby while another swoops in from the opposite direction to snatch the food

These Juvenile Western Gulls are brown, mottled "teenagers" hanging out on the beach in Baja.

I’ve noticed that seagulls are very good at stealing all sorts of food; they even look rather strange and imposing when they see someone eating something. I think they’re planning a heist. They seem very clever when it comes to getting their food, and what you describe is spot on.

The smaller seagulls look adorable, with their beautiful plumage, and you’ve taken some spectacular photographs of them. They’re always near the water, though I’ve seen them all over the city, searching here and there. I’ve loved the shots. Thank you very much and a big hug.🤗

Sure, they like to act as fools and then get your food. I experienced that on an island while having lunch. Great bird report.

Incredible, for a bird to act in that manner to feed is a serious, intelligent act. I would love to see such a bird in that very action. Just smiling all through reading this post. Your daughter-in-law was very good with the camera, capturing the birds' actions as they flew. Thank you for sharing.

Great photos. Love the shot with the crashing wave and the pelican on the beach with the gulls.

They have to feed and even if it means to steal they don't mind because they have to provide for their family lol

👍 Great shots! Gulls are among the most intelligent birds. And that's the mind they use to steal food. I've seen seagulls snatching people's food on YouTube many times, or looting straight from stores😄What a lucky thing that in my town, seagulls live exclusively on the river and eat fish.

This is a great catch, I commend this photographer.... Nice job!

Woo hoo, I'm shocked as well as surprised that these birds like you said could snatch things from the humans. That's to say, they can't even fear humanity? Lolz
