Time is an element of change, a tool that dictates the existence of every being. The construct of time is a combination of two major factors the future and the past while the present stands in between. Every thing that stands tall right now has its beginning deeply rooted in the past like a rock. As much as we might detest some of the activities that transgressed in the past it is what gave birth to whatever we see today.
I watched a Tv series named "Sandman" few weeks ago, there was a conversation that occurred between the new dreem of the endless and Gilbert. For those that watched the series would know Gilbert and the previous dream of the endless died fighting the furies also known as the kindly ones. After the new dream lord took the throne, he felt the need to amend all that was lost during the battle. He tried resurrect some of the characters in the dreamworld and he succeeded but it changed when it was time for him to bring back Gilbert.
For every other character the new dream lord brought back to life, they were filled with gratitude of being granted the privilege of living again but Gilbert perspective was different. For few minutes, he succeeded in bringing Gilbert back to life and in that moment they both had a very deep conversation.
Gilbert was aware that the new dream lord was trying to correct the damages of the past, so he said to the new dreem lord, "if you try to correct all the wrongs that has been done, what will be the essence of the sacrifices that were made". To Gilbert, he was more interested in honouring the sacrifice of giving up his life for the greater good than being granted the privilege of living again.
It makes you wonder what roles past errors play in everyone's life. Even if it is just for imagination sake, the moment you ask a person what they would do if they were granted the opportunity to travel to the past, the first thing that would cross their mind is how they would take their time in amending the past.
It is no doubt that the past is filled with lot of sorrowful events and this events has filled our minds with the thought of; I could have done better. What we fail to realise is that, whatever we must have done in the past is based on the knowledge we had at the moment, which means we couldn't have known any better until we passed through that specific experience that shaped our mindset.
Now that we have successfully acquired wisdom from the experience, we feel the urge to travel to the past and redo those things, undo mistakes. If mistakes can be undone so easily, wouldn't that cause more chaos than good? When you think of it, despite the fact that we humans tends to make lot of mistakes, we still try to be careful about making decisions to reduce the rate of mistakes but if there was a way for us to always undo our mistakes by just traveling to the past anytime we make mistakes, wouldn't that prompt us to act more carelessly?
I could do anything to anyone just because I believe it would be corrected, the earth will become chaotic and the past will lose it significance. I mean the past wouldn't be the past anymore, since anyone can visit the past like going on a picnic. With the past compromised, our present will become collateral damage for our carless acts.
The greatest dilemma of all is, for every mistake we undo we erase the lessons learnt from the experience and without lessons learnt from the experience, how would we become more knowledgeable? With no lessons learnt from experience and scars to remind of our imperfections, the world will fall into an era of pure ignorance.
