Savages - Paranoid
We will begin with a cover. Savages, a British post-punk gothic noise band that has been on hiatus for the past ten years, released a cover version of Black Sabbath's 1970 classic Paranoid to mark the tenth anniversary of their second album, Adore Life.
It's a pretty different, darker version with minimalist arrangements and powerful vocals. I'm sure fans of dark goth will dig it.
Dirty Sound Magnet - Power of This Song
Dirty Sound Magnet is a Swiss blues rock trio from Fribourg. They have been playing since 2016 and have released several singles and four albums to date. Their sound is a mixture of psych, blues, and hard rock. They are known for their energetic live performances.
The song 'Power of This Song' is a preview of their new album Me and My Shadow, which will be released at the end of January. It is also a tribute to Blind Willie Johnson's classic blues song, 'Nobody's Fault but Mine,' amplified with modern-era stoner and psychedelic elements. Blues resurrected from the grave, say enthusiasts.
Pat Metheny - In On It
Pat Metheny is a legendary American jazz guitarist and composer with 20 Grammys in various categories, over 20 million records sold, and an icon of fusion and modern jazz guitar. I won't say more about him, as you can easily find out more yourself if you're interested.
The song In On It is from his new album, Side-Eye III, which will be released in February and continues the concept of playing with young jazz musicians as accompaniment. Modern jazz fusion with his recognizable clean, melodic, and harmonically rich guitar tones.
Eileen Noise - You Weren't There
Eileen Noise is a new name to me. I first came across a video and only later found out it was a project by Italian musician Marco Marconi from Rome, who writes, plays, and produces everything himself in his home studio. He has released several singles so far, including You Weren't There ten days ago.
Dark rock is a blend of grunge influences, heavy distorted guitar, emotional vocals, and an introspective atmosphere. It reminds me of Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, maybe Nirvana.
The song is about emptiness, absence, and the pain of someone not being there when they should have been. I will continue to follow the project.
Gong - The Wonderment
Gong, veterans of progressive space rock from Canterbury, who have been active since 1967 and have released more than 15 studio albums, are announcing a new album, Bright Spirit, with the single The Wonderment at the beginning of March.
This song is also in their space-rock, progressive, and timeless-psychedelia style, similar to bands such as Soft Machine, Hawkwind, Caravan, and Ozric Tentacles.
Flea feat. Thom Yorke - Traffic Lights
Michael Balzary, or Flea, an Australian bassist and trumpeter best known as the bassist for the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, has announced his first solo album, Honora, which will be released at the end of January. He plays bass and trumpet (of course) throughout the album, with several other musicians contributing as well.
The first single from the album, Traffic Lights, was created in collaboration with Thom Yorke, frontman of Radiohead and Smile, who contributed vocals, piano, and synth. It's a lively fusion jazz sound with pulsating bass and trumpet parts and Yorke's distinctive vocals.
The Claypool Lennon Delirium - WAP
The Claypool Lennon Delirium is a project by Les Claypool (bassist for Primus, known for his funky/prog/psychedelic bass) and Sean Ono Lennon (son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, multi-instrumentalist, producer). For both, this is a side project that blends humor, weirdness, political satire, acid-rock influences, and experimental elements.
Since 2016, they have released several singles, one EP, and two albums. The single WAP is a preview of the new album 'The Great Parrot Ox and The Golden Egg of Empathy.'
Song WAP is a cover of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's 2020 hit. A dark meditation on morality, AI security, and a world that is becoming algorithmic. The band is new to me, but I will be following them closely to see where this goes.
Bill Frisell - In My Dreams
Bill Frisell is one of my favorite guitarists, blending jazz, folk, rock, and blues, and has influenced generations of young guitarists. He is very recognizable with his clean, reverb-heavy guitar sound, mixing electric and acoustic guitars, and always melodic and emotional. He has released more than 50 studio and live albums under his own name.
I started following him after discovering Naked City (1988-1993), the band led by saxophonist John Zorn. A radical mix of grindcore/punk/noise/free jazz/avant-rock. Later, he returned from this experimental phase and his ability to play anything, back to pure melodic jazz.
The song In My Dreams is a preview of the album of the same name, which will be released at the end of February this year. An introspective instrumental jazzy Americana song with electric and acoustic guitars, supported by strings.
πΆ That should be all for today, thanks for your attention, and enjoy your weekend with new songs!
