Beer Tasting: Staropramen Dark & Sullivan's Black Marble

in BEER6 days ago (edited)

Hello, beer lovers! 🍻

We are making progress, approaching 400, probably the oldest challenge on the Hive Blockchain (please correct me if I'm wrong).
#beersaturday challenge, 398 in a row, and I'm going to make time for a beer :)
And all this is just for fun!

You can join us here.
BeerSaturday Challenge

Today, I have two cans, two dark beers, one Czech and one Irish. I am delighted to taste them and share my experience with you.

🍻 😎 🍻

First, the one with less alcohol.

Staropramen Dark Lager

Brewed by Pivovary Staropramen, Praha, Czech Republic.
Can, 0,5 l, alcohol 4.4% ABV, IBU 20. Dark Lager style.

What do the Master Brewers say?

A dark lager that brings a swirl of flavors in every velvety drop. Made according to a traditional Czech recipe with roasted malts, Staropramen Dark combines the aromatic sweetness of caramel and the bitterness of the finest hops into a superb dark lager that will satisfy everyone's taste buds. It is rich in flavor and very drinkable.

🍺

The beer is dark brown, with a low head that disappears quickly. It has no particular odor. The first sip goes down the throat smoothly, and in the mouth, I taste a shy sweetness and hints of caramel, maybe even honey.
Only in the aftertaste does a slight hop bitterness appear and last for a while.

The beer is very drinkable, with surprisingly delicate flavors. It is nothing extreme but expressive and elegant enough, with a lower alcohol content, to make me drink another one in a heartbeat. But something else is waiting for me.
It's available in all the local shops, and at €1.10, it's a bargain, so it will be on the menu.

Let's move forward!

🍻 😎 🍻

Sullivan's Black Marble Stout

Brewed by Sullivan's Brewing Company, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny, Ireland.
Can, 0.5 l, alcohol 5.1% ABV, IBU 30. Stout style.

What do the Master Brewers say?

A fully flavored traditional Irish Dry Stout, displaying notable roast coffee and fruit notes gently balanced by delicious hop bitterness.

🍺

Kilkenny Red Ale is, for me personally, one of the better beers I've tasted, but I haven't tried this one yet.

The beer is dark brown, almost black, with a bit of head and a creamy head. It has no particular odor. It goes down the throat smoothly, and on the palate, I taste the bitterness of roasted malt, which is dominant throughout, along with hints of coffee and bitter chocolate. I don't taste any fruit, well, maybe prunes, but very little.
There is only a bitterness in the aftertaste that lasts for quite a while.

This is a drinkable and refreshing beer. The bitterness of the roasted malt is pronounced, and everything else is subordinated to it. It's not as effortlessly elegant as the previous beers, but it's still tasty enough to keep me going.
It is unavailable in our local shops, only by order, for €3.66.

🍻 😎 🍻

And what am I listening to when tasting beers and writing this? Something from my
Fridays #newtunes.
Something very lightly danceable and rhythmic.

Oh, I feel so sorry for you! Staropramen is from my hometown, Prague. And we generally say that if they would brew it from water rather than from horse piss, it would taste a tad better.

A tad, but still!

Haha, it's an OK beer, but I think the Prague people have got a bit cocky.

Pfff, we just like our beer crafted :) and piss free, is that cocky?

@2025 Molson Coors Brewing Company

They are quite successful here and in Croatia. If the beer were so bad, they wouldn't be. Or you mean to say that we do not know what good beer is here?

I don't know who buys it there, and why. People drink it here too, and we have some beer culture, just because it is cheap and well marketed. Good beer is more expensive, if you just want to get drunk, Staropramen might be fine.

If I look at the offer here, in terms of mass-produced industrial beers, it is better for me than the Slovenian industrial beers now owned by Heineken. For me, price is never a criterion for something to be better.

Price is not a criterion for something being better. On the other hand, brewing beer the proper way and from good ingredients is not cheap at all. While there is no guarantee an expensive beer would actually be good, it is impossible to brew a good beer and sell it below a certain price.

As I have already mentioned, industrial beers - I am thinking here in particular of those made in large quantities - are also subject to specific standards - and, in the case of large breweries, if something does not go on sale, they quickly replace the products. I am also convinced that the technological processes there are under strict control. But of course, if you are petite, which craft breweries usually are, they are typically defined as microbreweries; they all buy more expensive because they buy in small quantities. Logically, their beers are not cheap.

Je fakt, že u nás se to moc pít nedá. Ale čert ví, co vozí ven. Třeba vývozní Samson je o tři třídy lepší, než co prodávají domácím.

the design of those cans are amazing, i not so much fan of the stout but i would like drink the first one :D

They're both prepared from roasted malt. 🍻

Dark beer, a sweet bitter packed with sophistication.
I'd say both cans are very suitable for a long night.

Yeah, they are. But for the long night, you need more !BEER

I'd be tempted by Sullivan's Black Marble Stout, I really like Kilkenny... But I'll pass on the Staropramen with what @godfish has to say and the more it comes from the Molson galaxy (even if the head office is in Montreal)...
Have a great Sunday
Cheers 🍻

Beer is like music; personal taste is subjective. I agree that we have different opinions about the beer. That doesn't mean one opinion is better than the other. The important thing is that everyone enjoys what they like.

Yes, taste is very subjective, even a beer you liked, at another time, depending on your state of mind, it's not going to be that anymore...
But when I see that Molson is behind a beer, I have an "apriori". They've bought up a few microbreweries here to apply the same methods as their main beers, and I think they're losing authenticity and creativity.
Have a great Sunday

I think I understand what you are trying to say. I can agree there, but not entirely. We have had major breweries bought by Heineken, but to tell you the truth, I never liked those beers before, not now after the change of ownership.
Enjoy your Monday :)

I think I need to get mine in the fridge, Cheers 🍻

That's the right decision. Cheers!
