What's Your Plan?

A few years ago, you went to the store, filled your shopping cart, went to the cashier, where you were told how much you had to pay. Then you got the receipt, that you threw away right after.

Today things work a bit differently as you fill your shopping cart, scan the products and you know the total of your shopping before you press pay. You can even leave some stuff out if you see your shopping is getting close to your daily limit, if you have one. But this is not the best part.

The best part is that you don't throw the receipt away as it's digitally stored in the app, which means it's retrievable anytime you want and this brings us to where I want to go today in this post.

When the US-Israeli-Iranian war broke out, only the fools could think our life will not be affected by it. Anyone with half a brain could suspect changes are going to be made, regardless of your location and not in a good sense. At first everyone and their mother tried to minimize the impact it's going to have on our pocket, but it didn't take long to see how one thing triggers the other and how we're paying more and more for everything.

As I'm continuing my weight loss journey, my morning and evening meal contains vegetables. My meals would contain vegetables anyway, as fresh vegetables are important, but the problem is, it's spring in this part of the world and most of the fruits and veggies are imported. I suppose you can already figure out what this means and this is how my usual shopping costs doubled already. It was shocking to see my tomatoes, paprikas and cucumbers sold at 30% extra price, not I'd say it's painful that I pay 100% more.

Even before life started to get more expensive, I was thinking how to best handle the situation, without giving up too much or paying too much. I'm not going to cut veggies out of my diet, that's for sure as health is important, so I'd rather cut back in other areas.

Looking for deals is a good way to by more with less, but you need to be realistic and buy what you need, not what's on sale. I see so many buying just because some products are on sale, but if you don't need it, or buy too much, you don't save, on the contrary.

Talking to someone the other day I was told prices are going to come down and normalize once fresh, homegrown vegetables appear at the farmers market, but that's wishful thinking as production costs are still high, the government is trying to help, but we go from one political/governmental crisis to another, inflation is one of the highest of modern times, borrowing at state level costs more and more as credibility has long gone out of the window.

The problem is, the worst is yet to come, the effect of this war started by others is going to be felt for years and if you don't have a plan, it's going to slap you hard.

Two months ago, when the war broke out, I said we should be happy the heating season is over as capping gas and energy prices were about to expire. With the geopolitical changes, the government had to step in and introduce a new cap for household consumers, so that helps a little, but there will come a new heating season in a few months and better be ready.

I've been doing my best to be energy-efficient with the resources I have. Solar unfortunately is not an option at the moment as I only own the flat, not the building and to set up solar panels would require the consent and the contribution of all 20 owners, which I'm never going to get. Another solution would be 3 or 4 panels on my balcony, but I need to consult with my technician to see how much benefits I can obtain, vs costs, to see if it worth it and that would be a plan for next year anyway.

I'm not really a fan of journaling every penny spent as it kills your mood, but to protect myself, I'm setting up a plan and following it through to see how I can grow instead of going into any kind of debts, or going backwards. Failing is not an option. Never is! Work harder, make smarter decisions, learn to be better and it's doable. There's always a way, you just have to avoid being blind to the problem.

By the way, this morning I dropped my phone and as a result, I cracked the glass protection of the display 😬 This is the first one on this phone, set up when I bought the phone four and a half years ago. I paid 10 euro back then but I suspect now it's going to cost me around 25, but it's possible I'm too optimistic. We'll see. I'll let you know.

What about you? What have you changed in your life, since the war broke out? What's your plan for the upcoming year or two?

Uncertainty is high now, what will happen? No one knows, what's sure is that Trump can't afford to keep the conflict ongoing till mid term elections, it will cost him too much, this summer we won't suffer too much, despite some fly canceled, but the winter will be tough, a lot, then we gotta see how spring turns out... Btw I never do self scan at supermarket, nor i take the digital receipt

Btw I never do self scan at supermarket, nor i take the digital receipt

Why not? It's the easiest way and you don't have to stay in line.

I don't really go in big crowded supermarkets so the wait time is about the same... Also the self checkout makes the supermarket save on cashier wage but they don't give you any discount, so fuck them! I'll make the cashier work

Hard to say about plans, but my second half afraids to fly to that part of world for vacation for example.
But we need to plan something as so as now we can go for vacation just at summer or at days of school holidays coz our elder kid in this year will go for the 1st class.
And yes my life changed, for me it's a personal moments but I feel them.

I would be afraid to fly to those destinations, but not because of the bombing. My concern would rather be about flight prices. It's shocking how more expensive the tickets got.

It affects everyone in a way or another.

I didn't check prices yet, but now I'm afraid too))

oof... I am just feeling depressed reading this post, but what one can do, this is the reality of the time.

We are going to face the consequences of this war on a larger scale in the time coming... especially, because of the rise in the price of the feul which is the root of high prices of all the goods and otherwise.

I agree with you, we should be get prepared, nonetheless.

We agree on that and unfortunately so many can't see it. They think they are safe as nothing much has changed yet. But it will. Sad, but this is the truth.

I couldn't agree more.

Eating healthy has always cost a little more and now it is like buying organic when they are just normal fruit and vegetables. The prices are crazy today and you need to be price conscious knowing your prices.

Yes, you need to know what to buy, when and where, otherwise you are sponsoring others to your detriment.

I haven't changed anything yet. Since I still work full time AND draw my Social Security benefits, I can afford what I need.

What it may affect later is that I was toying with the idea of retiring from my job next year. Depending on how things go between now and then though, when it gets closer to time I may decide that is not the thing to do just yet.

Of course this is always dependent on my having a choice about what happens to my job. Many folks believe they get will get to make that choice only to find at some point, their company lets them go for whatever reason, so sometimes you think you will have a choice.... and then you don't.

I hope you can retire when you want and not when they force you to. It's terrible to lose your job close to retirement as no one hires you. Fingers crossed for you Jacey!

Thank you! I have worked for this company 28 years, but that is no longer a guarantee for anything in this world. I haven't heard any rumors like that about my own company, but I am hearing a lot about how it is happening all around, so there is no way to feel totally safe about it.

My dad, who was a factory worker for all his life, teached me we can live anice and happy life even if we have just few money. This was an important lesson in my life, because during the hard time (like this time, because I agree with you, this hard time is affecting the life of all of us in many different ways) I can enjoy the little things around me. Since a couple of year I started, for example, to sell some of my old books (the ones I don't like so much) on Vinted and I use that money to buy something I need (on Vinted). Thanks my plum tree I can have some jars of jam to eat during the next months and thanks the veggie garden of my mom I can eat excellent salads during the warm months. ❤️

Same here and I appreciate it a lot. I see people with big dreams, always unsatisfied and unhappy, they can never enjoy anything they have as they always want more. Not the best way of living.

I'm also selling everything I don't need and it feels good to make room for new things, while you get some money too.

My dad has a garden too and he's doing some gardening, so I'm already waiting for those goodies, but a few months still needed as it's still cold. 💚

I was off and not much active since August 2024, but made some posts in 2025 again get off, did lot of on and offs in my activity, but now I decided to give proper time to make some more friends.

25 Euro isn't it too much for just a Glass Protection?

25 Euro isn't it too much for just a Glass Protection?

This is my guess, but if that's the price, what can you do?
I'm not going to risk my screen.

Off Course I will go for a replacement.
That is necessary for sure.

Found a cheaper way, btw.

What was that? And How cheap it was?

$7 for a glass protection

Hmm that is fine. Take Care now.

Other than gas prices I have not noticed any price changes here in America and I am the one shopping for groceries in our family.

In fact prices on used cars and housing are dropping and there seem to be more sales on everything. Screen protectors are $5 for a pack of three on Amazon with free shipping even on the latest phones like IPhone Pro Max 17

My wife and I spend probably about $100 to $150 per week in groceries. It never fails that 60% to 70% of our bill is fresh fruits and vegetables. We don't eat a ton of junk usually, so we just don't buy that sort of stuff. We will see a bit of relief when the farmers market opens up, but harvest isn't usually until late Summer and they are only open twice a week when we are usually busy, so getting there to take advantage is rough.
