What was my biggest project last year?
I've posted a little bit about it a few times, especially about my trips to the island of Pag, but never in detail. They have now come up.
When I was in my caravan on the island of Pag in April last year, I noticed that maybe it was time to fix the canopy. It had been leaking water for some time and slowly destroying the terrace I had made of wood-nit slabs about four years ago.
If there is water on the wood panels, they become soft and useless. Of course, when I did this eight years ago, I assumed they would always be dry (because of the roof), but that was not the case.
We decided to build a new one, but we won't be alone this time. I made a deal with a colleague who works with wood and puts up canopies everywhere. We should do it sometime in late autumn, when there are few people at the campsite, and we don't want to disturb anyone. Of course, the weather has to be nice.
He advised me to buy construction timber in Slovenia because it's much cheaper. There are hardly any trees on the island of Pag, and all the wood is brought from the mainland.
I should also dismantle the previous carport myself first.
It didn't look all that complicated, so I planned to go to the island at the end of September, dismantle the carport, buy the timber cut to size in Slovenia, and bring it to the plot. When the weather was nice, my colleague and his team would come, and we would finish the job in a couple of days.
But it dragged on. Because of my commitments, my younger son and I only arrived in Pag at the end of October and started working. It went relatively quickly. One afternoon, one morning, we were home by the evening.
The next step was transporting the wood from Slovenia to the island of Pag, Croatia. As I mentioned above, it took a while - not the transport but the wood's order. I ordered the construction timber at the end of August to be prepared and cut to the measured lengths. I was assured that everything would be ready in the second week of September. I paid for the timber and the cutting and went to the Hive Fest in Split.
When I got back, everything would be waiting for me. It wasn't.
Carpenter: "Gosh, you know, I've had a lot of work ... blah, blah, blah..."
Of course, I've gone mad; they're all the same; they'll take the order and the money, but when it comes down to it, the agreements don't precisely...
I was worried because winter was coming, and when there's a hurricane storm in winter in Pag, it's impossible to do anything...
It was only on 22 November that I got the construction timber! 😠
It may not look like a lot of wood, but the whole thing weighed more than 3000 kg. To top it all off, it was snowing here that day.
The weather forecast was good for the next day when my colleague and I had arranged a lift. We set off early in the morning, sunny and windless, with a beautiful view of Kvarner Bay.
And we arrived at around 11:00 a.m. Everything was in place.
Unloading took a while, and then we loaded up the old wood (I have some ideas for a shed in my field 😂) and protected the cargo we brought.
We headed back in the late afternoon sun; it was dark when we arrived home.
And now for the third part.
In early December, the weather forecast for the island of Pag for the first week showed sunny weather and little wind.
The decision was made. Let's get this over with!
The team was great!
My colleague brought his two sons who work with him. We rushed to finish the roof while it was still not blowing so hard, and we did it.
Now, the terrace!
The wind started to blow harder, but we were under the roof, and everything was more manageable.
Finished!
It took three days, and on the fourth day, we went home.
However, the ferries didn't run because of a strong storm, so we went over the Pag bridge, on the other side of the island, to Zadar, south, which extended the journey home by 200 kilometers.
But who cares? The main thing is that the work is done!
This year's first activity will be to paint the whole canopy with protective paint in March or April, depending on the weather. Then, we'll see.
Maybe I'll close it all or just part of it. Since I am no longer under pressure from work (I am retired now), I have plenty of time.
