Our family celebration for Christmas/birthdays/and New Years was such fun! I love it when we all can be together!

A few appetizers while we waited for the meal to be served.

Garnet bracelet salad is a layered potato salad that originated in Russia. Ours had layers of grated potatoes, carrots, eggs, beets, walnuts and mayonnaise, and was decorated with pomegranate seeds. It was as delicious as it was beautiful and festive.

The Russian word for pomegranate and garnet gemstone are the same – «гранат»

The Garnet Bracelet is a short novel by Russian writer Alexander Kurpin and is a tragic story of unrequited love.

I will be reading the book!

My son cooked our 24 pound turkey outdoors on the grill and did a marvelous job! It was moist and perfectly seasoned. We ended up getting a bit of snow the next day, so although it was cold, I was glad that it was dry out on the deck for grilling!

These petit fours were a gift to all of us from my mom. She just celebrated her 90th birthday and distance made it impossible for her to be here.

Love how all the food is so festively decorated.

the pomegranate broken open on top of the meat/cheese/olive tray looks really nice. I've never seen it done like that. I also had never heard of the Garnet Bracelet Salad.

We often serve fruit with cheese. Apple and pear slices and grapes are common on cheese trays or paired together in lettuce salads.

My son's wife grew up in Russia and has family there. She recently did a backdoor visit to Sochi to visit her elderly parents. Traveling to Russia from the US is not particulary easy right now, but she had not seen her family since before Covid and her Dad has been in poor health.
