Family Is Not Always Everything || LOH #300

in Ladies of Hive3 days ago

Growing up, we all had popular myths or random beliefs that we thought to be true simply because the adults around us successfully convinced us to the point of zero doubt. I don’t know how they did it so easily, but they always had their way with us. That’s why a huge number of us believed something as hideous as an orange tree growing from our heads if we ever swallowed the seed.

I can recount a whole lot of those beliefs but one that made me begin to question eeverything I heard was the notion that family is everything.

I grew up in one of the most popular African countries where women were valued by how much they served the men in their families, and people were discouraged or shamed for publicly talking about the wrongdoings of their families. I grew up in an environment where respect was forcefully imposed on every child without clear teachings on why it was necessary for a sane society. Even worse, we were taught to be docile; never to question our parents' words or stand up to them.

Truly, as a kid, I was uncomfortable with these things but had no choice other than to believe that the adults around me were right. I thought, after all, they had experienced life much more than I had. So, I began to treat family as everything.

I believed if it took giving respect and apologies to a family member who didn’t deserve it just to keep the peace, then so be it. So even when I saw brothers who had betrayed each other, I subconsciously tried to look at it from the angle I had been made to believe: that family was all we’ve got no matter the storm. The worst part was being gaslighted to think that the food, shelter and clothing they provided for us was enough to always consider them the best in the world.

Now that I’ve become an adult, I realize how simplistic that belief was, alongside my thoughts. I began to understand that the phrase "family is everything" is as conditional as love and if they are not bringing us the desired happiness and peace, then they are not everything.

I mean, why should we even be obligated to see them as our all in all when some of them derive joy in seeing us sad, speak poorly of us to others, and sometimes deny us the basic things they ought to provide, including love and support?

In my country, many people would even encourage you to endure the toxicity simply because, according to them, no one else can be there for you as much as family. This is something I’ve found to be untrue. Sometimes, it’s the strangers we meet on a random Tuesday who keep our feet warm for a hundred years. Not those we share blood ties with.

These days, I’m only happy I no longer entertain that belief. I now consider family to be the people who will always stand strong for me and go the extra mile without me asking. They are the ones who will speak positive words over me, have no intention of cheating me, abusing me, or withholding good opportunities from me.

It’s the people whose friendship with me has stood the test of time, the siblings who will always listen without judgment, the parents who will always provide for me, if they can, without making me feel like a burden, and the brother who would make as many sacrifices as the girl child does in many homes.

Those are the people who are everything because not only do they reaffirm my faith in love, but they also give me hope for a kinder world, which I hope to experience.

Special appreciation to the beautiful @nainaztengra for providing a lovely PROMPT to which this post is dedicated to.🤗

Ohh yes, sadly that was the conditioning 2 to 3 decades back that every parent did to their children. Never question elders and always obey. I too believe that was so wrong, but at the same time now I see that children never want to listen to their parents. Both extremes are not good

Thank you for acknowledging that this dysfunction is dated back to decades ago. It's quite sad because I still come across many young adults who adopted the mindset from their parents.

I wish there was balance in some way. It would be helpful in keeping those extremes at bay. Thanks for your lovely contribution to my post, sis. I wish you a lovely weekend.🌺

Family to me is more than blood. It is something earned if you know what I mean. We don't have to be blood to be family.

I certainly know what you mean. I do share the same opinion now and I haven't regretted it ever since.

“blood is thicker than water” coming from someone that has betrayed you in unimaginable ways. Lmao.

Whatever love or support ‘family’ gets from me, at this stage in my life, is what is earned. Many evil people face, come from their family but due to upbringing and leaning into “family will always remain family,” they’ve refused to cut ties.

Bruh, it's crazy. I always wonder why people do not see how enabling that statement could be in bad situations that deserve zero grace.

Oh well, I’m not too worried as long as my mindset isn’t tied to such statements anymore. I’m glad you’ve also defined what family means to you. It’s as important as anything.

Beautiful write up Yecheeeee 👏
Over the years, what I have gotten to realise is that we can call someone "family" and we might not in any way be related. Like I do call some of my guys family because of the bonds we have shared. So I can simply say family is everything even though they ain't my blood.

Thank you so much, Dave. You are correct about the possibility of finding family in the friends we may not be related to by blood.

It’s the experience of them and great test of character that proves their place in our lives, and I’m glad you’ve got some genuine bonds with other people in your life.

Experiences do teach us that certain beliefs are not always true. Family doesn't have to be blood.

Absolutely. I am part of those with such experience shaping my present belief. Even though I wished for better, I’m happy my eyes have been opened to the truth.

Have a lovely weekend, Lady!

orange tree growing from our heads if we ever swallowed the seed.

Omg! It's watermelon for meeeee. Lolol

But yeah, even now, if it's a family and even if they did bad to you even throw hurtful words, respect should still be given to them coz they are a family and another thing is they are the elders. Like, its sad that some had to just embrace their bullsh*t coz they are a so called family. Aigoooo

Haha. I guess we were all sold same lie with different fruits.

I really think the idea of encouraging us to endure wickedness and respect people who deserve nothing enables poor behavior, and we can never find change if we keep at it.

Personally, I no longer entertain such advices. I hope you don’t too.

I don't, I ignore and do things my way. Its better that way. Peace of mind is whats important rn 🌼🌟

I agree. Proud of ya!🥰

Yesss, proud of you too, this deserve a high five \(^o^)/

Don't want to play devil's advocate here, but friends can also act like some of your family members... They can also betray and deceive us, with the difference that we can "ditch them", and family will stay family... On the other side, I suppose those bad seeds of the family are usually marginalized, or simply ignored... At least, that's how I deal with it... Family members who don't appreciate others are those that I don't keep in contact with at all... Yes, we tend to give "more chances" to the family than others, but why would we spend our time on those who don't deserve it?

As you said, we have good friends who are by our side, and we should be by their side, too!

I don't agree less with you. I mean, terrible humans will continue to be that regardless of what position they hold in our lives. The problem is gaslighting people who choose to see family differently and enabling even poorer behaviours with the statement that claims family is everything.

I love my family a lot, but I've also learned to keep a distance with the ones who have proven to be less reliable and trustworthy.

Like you said, I hope we channel our enegeries to those who deserve it, and try to be just as kind as our neighbours!

Thank you so much for your comment and the curation. I deeply appreciate it!🥰

Even a total stranger would stay true and genuine more than a blood related person would do. Family isn't everything truly and until we realize it ourselves, we can't fully understand the bondage we put ourselves in, all in the name of keeping a bond which is not meant to be nutured

Apt! I've seen this happen a number of times and it became proof of love going beyond family members.

I like how you express undeserving family ties as bonds that should not be nurtured. If only people understood it this way! All the same, thanks for this valuable comment, Kenny!

I agree with you; it’s not just about family. There are people who—as you say—show us the hope of a kinder world. Surrounding yourself with such people is an invaluable treasure. Thanks for sharing your experiences,

Truly, life begins to get better when we understand that family is not the only unit capable of showing genuine love to us.

Thank you, too, for stopping by. I wish you a lovely weeekend.
