If I could create a law for my country, it would be one that forces us to stop exploiting our natural resources as if they were inexhaustible. I'm talking about forests, rivers, and seas. I'm not saying we should stop using them completely; that would be unrealistic. But I am fed up with seeing how hectares of forest disappear every year, how rivers become more polluted, and how the sea loses species that were once abundant.
My law would stipulate that any company or individual using natural resources must demonstrate, with data and facts, that those resources are increasing year after year, not decreasing. If someone cuts down trees, they would have to plant more than they cut down and ensure they grow. If someone fishes at sea, they would have to implement measures to ensure there are more fish next season, not fewer. If an industry uses water from a river, it would have to return it cleaner than when it took it.
I know this sounds radical to many. They'll tell me it's expensive, complicated, and that it hurts the economy. But what's truly expensive and complicated is losing the forests that give us oxygen, the rivers that give us clean water, and the seas that give us food. What really hurts the economy is losing the resources we depend on in the long run.
I've seen too many places where there used to be forests and now there are deserts. Too many rivers that were once crystal clear and are now sewers. Too many beaches where there was once marine life and now there's only sand. And it's always the same: first they exploit the resources until they're exhausted, then they move on to exploit another place, and we're left with the dead land.
I don't want that for my country. I don't want my nephews to have to see pictures of what the forests used to be like because they're gone. I don't want them to have to buy bottled water because the rivers are polluted. I don't want them to eat fish from other countries because ours no longer produces enough.
That's why I would create that law. A law that doesn't allow "development" at the cost of destruction. A law that understands that natural resources aren't just commodities; they are the foundation of our lives. And if we don't take care of them, there won't be a viable economy when we don't have water to drink, land to cultivate, or clean air to breathe.

Si yo pudiera crear una ley para mi país, sería una ley que obligue a dejar de explotar nuestros recursos naturales como si fueran inagotables. Hablo de los bosques, los ríos y los mares. No digo que dejemos de usarlos por completo, eso sería poco realista. Pero sí estoy harta de ver cómo cada año desaparecen hectáreas de bosque, cómo los ríos se contaminan más y cómo el mar pierde especies que antes eran abundantes.
Mi ley establecería que cualquier empresa o persona que utilice recursos naturales tenga que demostrar, con datos y hechos, que esos recursos están aumentando año tras año, no disminuyendo. Si alguien corta árboles, tendría que plantar más de los que cortó y asegurarse de que crezcan. Si alguien pesca en el mar, tendría que implementar medidas para que la próxima temporada haya más peces, no menos. Si una industria usa agua de un río, tendría que devolverla más limpia de lo que la tomó.
Sé que esto suena radical para muchos. Me dirán que es caro, que es complicado, que afecta la economía. Pero lo que realmente es caro y complicado es quedarnos sin bosques que nos den oxígeno, sin ríos que nos den agua limpia y sin mares que nos den alimento. Lo que realmente afecta la economía es perder los recursos de los que dependemos a largo plazo.
He visto demasiados lugares donde antes había bosque y ahora hay desiertos. Demasiados ríos que eran cristalinos y ahora son cloacas. Demasiadas playas donde antes había vida marina y ahora solo queda arena. Y siempre pasa lo mismo: primero explotan hasta agotar, luego se van a explotar otro lugar, y nosotros nos quedamos con la tierra muerta.
No quiero eso para mi país. No quiero que mis sobrinos tengan que ver fotos de cómo eran los bosques porque ya no existen. No quiero que tengan que comprar agua embotellada porque los ríos están contaminados. No quiero que coman pescado de otros países porque el nuestro ya no produce.
Por eso crearía esa ley. Una ley que no permita el "desarrollo" a costa de la destrucción. Una ley que entienda que los recursos naturales no son solo mercancía, son la base de nuestra vida. Y si no los cuidamos, no habrá economía que valga cuando no tengamos agua qué tomar, ni tierra qué cultivar, ni aire limpio qué respirar.
