Whale watching

in Photo-essaylast month

My kids were just in Todos Santos, and had front-row seats from their 'tent' to the peak of the whale-watching season. It was a fabulous place to enjoy the night sky, too!

Todos Santos, in Baja California in Mexico is a small town on the major corridor for the North Pacific humpback whale population, which migrates from feeding grounds in Alaska and Canada to the warmer waters of Baja to breed and nurse their young.

By March, calves born in December or January have grown significantly. They are stronger and much more playful, often seen practicing their breaches and tail slaps repeatedly to build muscle for the long journey north.

Shore-based spotting at Punta Lobos or right from the beach at Villa Santa Cruz is possible because mothers keep their calves in the shallower waters closer to the shore to avoid predators like orcas and to minimize harassment from aggressive male "escorts" who are still looking to mate.

Humpbacks are considered the most acrobatic of the great whales.

While you can't hear them singing from the shore, the males are actively singing complex "songs" during this time to attract mates.

Humpbacks have massive pectoral fins (up to 15 feet long). They often lay on their side and slap the water, creating a loud "crack" that can be heard for miles underwater.

The full-body leap out of the water is called breaching. . Scientists believe this is a form of communication, a way to shake off parasites, or simply play.

These majestic giants are the real thing! Many marvelous photos were taken and they are beginning to fill up my family albums, do be on the lookout for more posts with Baja photos soon!

You can't imagine how much I enjoyed this post! I stopped to look at each photograph with passion, because as a nature lover, seeing whales in their natural habitat is a dream I'd like to fulfill someday, even if they're far from the coast. Baja California has always seemed like an interesting place to me, but now I know it can be even more so with spectacles like this. The first image of the starry sky also touched my soul. Thank you so much for letting me experience the magic of life through this post. I hope you're well 🙏

Great images, it must have been fun to watch! Hopefully I will be able to do some whale watching on Whidbey Island this year. It is supposed to be the prime time for whale watching right now, but we have not visited the island in the last few weeks...

Again, I am envious that you live so close to the ocean!

Whales are so impressive. What a cool shots. I was lucky to withess these impressive humpback whales jump from the ocean once too. It's even more impressive to witness it live.

The world that exists in our oceans is incredible! For those of us who live far from the sea each visit is astonishing!

Thanks Mick! The support is appreciated.

I've had the opportunity to see whales, and it's such a fascinating and relaxing experience... Great photos!

You are fortunate! Many people live entire lifetimes without seeing them.

A fabulous post milady :)

We also have whales coming in from the antarctica to breed here in the Cape of South Africa. Southern Right Whales, humpback whales, and brydes whales. They breed from June until November, and then we have the shark hunters, a pair of Orcas called port and starboard, and the nicknames were given to them due to the dorsal fins on their backs hanging in opposite directions.
I can send you a great sites URL where you can see everything about the whales that visit here, if you want.

You are fortunate to live near enough to the ocean to visit and see these incredible creatures! I'd love to have you share that URL. You have whales there that I know nothing about.

We are filled with gratitude for being near the Atlantic Ocean, as it teems with life.
The url has an instant link, and I am dubius about sharing it in case of scammers. You can Google: I Love Cape Town, Whale Watching.

Humpback whales are really fun to see out on the ocean. We see them off of the coast the here if you know where to look, but it's been a few years since I've gone out! I'm glad they had fun and came back with so many great pictures and memories. The best time to travel is while you're young, I'm glad I did a lot of mine in my younger years!

I've never seen these large marine mammals, but I've read that they're very impressive, even from a distance. Thanks for sharing your experience and photos.

Whale Hello GIF

They are unbelievably huge!

Woah, soo interesting, it will be nice to see these animals live. Just similar to the atlantic Ocean at the Eko beach but I do not know if such Whales exist there. Your children are fortunate going for explorations and sight seeing with every given opportunity. That's good of you Ma'am. Taking care of the family. !PIZZA

Our oceans are amazing. There are such incredible creatures living there!

Great pictures and a superb capture, but I still keep wondering how the Orcas get around them?

Orcas are definitely apex predators of the marine world!

Very cool post and photos. We spotted whales occasionally when we lived in Northern California. Beautiful, majestic animals for sure. Love that "tent" set up

I do envy people who live close enough to an ocean that they can visit free quently!

Waooo. Amazing, nice pictures and experience.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the post!

🥰

It must be truly magnificent to see whales playing in the water. I was once at Old Fisherman's Wharf (Monterey) and went on a boat trip to see whales, but unfortunately, there weren't any at the time.

Too bad you didn't get to see any. I wonder how often that happens after paying to go out whale watching.
!INDEED

I think quite often. If I remember correctly, it was about 10 years ago, there is also a sign saying that they cannot guarantee you will see anything. But it was interesting.

I know from pictures that whales are very huge That is why they can convinently swallow up the humans. It's a reliving sight.

They are huge, but Whales do not eat people. In fact, most whales are physically incapable of swallowing a human.

Ok... I remember, sharks are men eaters.

It's a beautiful sight! The first photo is just a fire, a cool view.

Thanks! I love seeing all those stars!
