I'm actually writing this post as a sort of test this morning. I have a theory which I am going to keep to myself for now, but I wanted to test that theory. I also thought I might try my hand at a poll for the first time. Even if you don't read through the whole thing, please be sure to at least scroll down to the bottom and participate in the poll!

As you may or may not know, some time ago I created the grilling and smoking community here on HIVE. Unfortunately, it hasn't gotten the traction I expected. I know part of it just has to do with how active users there are on HIVE, but it's a bit disheartening to see grilling and smoking communities on Facebook have hundreds of thousands of users and my community here has 30.

I honestly don't know if that is ever going to change, but it isn't going to stop me from posting and curating this community that I created. I think it has a lot of potential.

I've been seeing people post quite a bit lately on those Facebook groups about how the temperatures are finally getting above the freezing mark so people are busting out their grills. I have to laugh a bit at posts like that. If you recall from some of my previous content, I was smoking a brisket when it was something like -2 degrees F outside. Short of a blizzard, there isn't much weather that I won't grill in.

In fact, I am thinking about doing a half rack of ribs this weekend, but they are now calling for rain. I had a discussion with @mrsbozz about it last night and I decided I am going to go ahead and do it anyway. Even if it is raining. With the lid on the Weber Kettle, it shouldn't have too much impact on the outcome. At the very least It might just make it take a little longer.

Now that that snow is all gone (for now), I moved the Weber Kettle from the front of the garage back to its regular place beside the patio in the backyard. I try to keep it just far enough away from the deck that the composite materials don't melt or anything like that. It had been a couple of weeks since we last smoked the turkey breasts, so I decided to grill a couple bratwurst and some chicken for @mrsbozz's lunches through the week.

PXL_20250309_205253667.jpg

On this occasion instead of using the soy/honey/garlic/oil marinade that we often use for chicken, we decided to go with a quick and easy solution. We really like the bottled Greek dressing from the Ken's Steakhouse brand. It gives the chicken a really great flavor and it also keeps it moist and juicy.

The bratwurst were some we had left over from a trip we took some time ago. I think I am actually out of sausages now, so I am going to have to go to the store and pick some up to freeze for the future.

At first I thought I just had the bratwurst to grill and I was struggling with the idea of firing up the large Kettle for just two sausages. I was thinking about using our smaller camping grill until my wife pointed out that we needed to grill chicken as well. It's kind of a running joke in some of those Facebook groups I mentioned earlier about people lighting their kettle for just two small hotdogs and things like that.

It's pretty rare that my wife and I ever grill hotdogs, but bratwurst on the other hand we do pretty regularly. As I said, I probably would have just used the smaller grill instead of the larger one if I were just doing the two brats. This weekend there is a good chance I am going to have to fire up both grills so I can grill something for @mrsbozz while my baby back ribs are finishing up.

Hopefully as the weather starts to warm up a bit more, that will lead people to fire up their grills and then maybe we will get some more activity in this community. I really hope that is the case because I love talking about grilling. My sister in law shared a meme with me the other day and by some coincidence I had just seen it the day before in my news feed. It went like this:

"After turning 40, men must make a decision; to either get very serious into World War II history, or really into smoking meats."

I guess we know which direction I went!

So now, without further fanfare, let's get to the poll portion of this post. I'm curious to know how the numbers fall when it comes to grilling and smoking. Please take the poll and let me know what kind of grill you primarily use when you have some food you need to get cooked. There are no wrong answers, but I might look at you a little differently if you choose gas...

Just kidding, there really are no wrong answers.

What kind of grill do you use?

Sort:

I don't use a grill because it's too much trouble when cooking for only one person. That being said, though, I had an old-timey charcoal grill back in my younger days, but we had a nicer gas grill after being married a few years.

Oddly enough as it might seem to some people, grilling is virtually solely in the domain of menfolk in my part of the world. Men light them, huddle together around them as they cook, and clean/store them later. Women don't touch 'em. 😂

That needs to change. In a number of the groups I am in people post pictures of their daughters or wives firing up the grill. It's a good thing to see!

Gas my favorite way to go. Ready to grill in 2 min. No cleanup needed or easy cleanup when you feel like it. If you want other flavor, just add some wood bits or other to give more smoke or taste.

I don't know, every time I am forced to use a gas grill I can never get the cook right. It usually takes way longer than it should and the grill never gets up to a decent temp even with all the burners on full blast. It's been different grills too, so I can't even blame it on one specific grill being faulty. It just ends up being a lot more work and a lot more stress when I have to deal with gas.

Just charcoal, either one of those throwaway grills or a little home barbecue we had until last year. We have a Weber retailer not too far away, in fact a nice drive, and I'm looking forward to going over and having a look around.

I'd love to visit an actual Weber store one day. They have a restaurant in Chicago where everything is cooked on one of their grills. It's pretty impressive from what I have heard. One of the things I like about Weber is they don't often change their models, so the parts are all pretty standard and easily accessible if you need to replace something.

i probably have used the charcoal grill before and its quite the best, however it has too much work to to set up so i just go for the less stressful one which is gas.

That's a trade off I can't accept personally. It's cool if it works for you though.

hahaha which do you prefer that brings that roasted meat taste to life ?

I prefer charcoal. It's how I was raised!

ohh yah totally agreed with that, am a living witness of how good food cooked or grilled with charcoal taste very super

It is interesting how Facebook sort of fell out of favor but then returned to favor at various times and that nothing else took over and replaced it. I feel like Facebook marketplace contributed a lot to that.

That could be. I don't really use it too much except for the groups now. That seems to be the real use case for it anymore. At least for the older generation like me!

taste the meat not the heat

jk

Haha! Good one!

Weber Q (gas) at home...open fire in the wilderness. I think you can guess which I prefer.

I think I definitely can!

I have a duel sided grill my boys got me for fathers day a couple years ago. One side does pellet and the other is charcoal. I have used the pellet side only so far. The plan is to start using the charcoal side this spring. Gonna try and wear my grill out. Regretfully I am one of those who has not BBQ in the winter this year. Maybe as my health allows next winter, I will give it a go.

I was looking at one of the ones that is gas on one side and charcoal on the other for a while, but they are just so big. I figured it would take up way too much space. I really love my Weber. I'm actually getting low on charcoal and I need a sale to come around so I can stock back up!

I don't have a grill. Even if we were meat eaters here, since the house lots are so small here, grilling at home isn't a thing in Japan. If we did, the neighbors would look at us funny and they'd complain to others and pretty soon the neighborhood head would be paying us a visit to scold us.

I've heard about neighborhoods like that. I don't think I could handle it. I've also seen stories about vegan Karen's complaining about the cooking meat smells in their neighborhood. My wife and I have looked at buying a condo, but I think that would be the big deal breaker for me.

It's not just some neighborhoods here as with some there, it is everywhere. Just different culture. Japan has a lot going for it, but in terms of personal freedom to do things around your house, America has it beat (well, at least for now)

Interesting. I guess if it isn't something you are used to then you probably don't miss it quite so much. It would be super hard for me though.

seeing it at this time made me hungry!!!
It's grill time here too, obviously in central and southern Italy, in the north it's still too cold

Cold is just a state of mind!

XD

Bratwurst is always awesome! Much better than any hot dog! lol I do like my smoker, but I don't use it as often as I should. Mine's a Weber, they make great quality stuff. Getting a big following on grilling might take awhile to get going. I considered doing a prospecting group but there aren't enough people here that have much interest in searching for gold out in the wilderness!

Yeah, I can see why prospecting would be a tough one. I think most people probably think it is a dead art. I was kind of surprised myself to find that people still do it. Do you have one of the upright smokey mountains or whatever they are called. I had an old Brinkman like that, but it was in rough shape so it didn't work well. I'd like to get one of the Weber's sometime to compliment my kettle.

The 22 inch smokey mountain, it's really nice. I just need to use it more often. I've been trying to cut back on red meat consumption and that's really when I stopped using it as much!

Yeah, I don't blame you for that. I eat less red meat than I used to, but still more than I probably should.
