I don't have a grill. Even if we were meat eaters here, since the house lots are so small here, grilling at home isn't a thing in Japan. If we did, the neighbors would look at us funny and they'd complain to others and pretty soon the neighborhood head would be paying us a visit to scold us.

I've heard about neighborhoods like that. I don't think I could handle it. I've also seen stories about vegan Karen's complaining about the cooking meat smells in their neighborhood. My wife and I have looked at buying a condo, but I think that would be the big deal breaker for me.
It's not just some neighborhoods here as with some there, it is everywhere. Just different culture. Japan has a lot going for it, but in terms of personal freedom to do things around your house, America has it beat (well, at least for now)
Interesting. I guess if it isn't something you are used to then you probably don't miss it quite so much. It would be super hard for me though.
