I don’t know what I thought I was doing when I set out to watch a movie titled “Old Guy”. Did I half expect to see an old man with super powers or abilities, yes I did. But on the contrary, what I saw got me so pissed off.

## About the Movie
Danny Dolinski, an aging contract killer with a golden heart, still believes he's the best at what he does. Stuck at a dead end after undergoing a wrist surgery on his dominant hand, Danny is thrilled when the company he works for pulls him back into the field; to train a Gen Z newcomer, Wahlberg, who happens to be a prodigy assassin with an attitude and a weird fashion sense. The mismatched pair is asked to assassinate top members of a rival crime syndicate and while they are at it, they discover a deep secret that would change their entire perspective.
This action thriller film was directed by Simon West and has a run time of 104 minutes. Released on the 24th of March, 2024, the film stars veteran actors like Christoph Waltz, Cooper Hoffman, Lucy Liu and Kate Katzman.
## My Opinion

I have never explicitly called a movie boring because I understand the hard work, effort and resources put into making a movie a success. But after giving this movie a second thought and a third, I will classify it as *boring et bland*. I was bored out of my mind while seeing this film but judging from the fact that many movies climax towards the end, I decided to give the film the benefit of doubt. And I regretted doing so.
The characters performed very poorly. I'm very big on the idea that proper roleplay by the characters makes a good movie. A plot can be very brilliant but without dedicated characters, it's just a wasted plot. This film had a pretty good plot but the characters messed things up in my opinion. From the title of the movie, one would expect an old guy to be one of the lead characters and this was the case. But the old guy here absolutely under performed. I say this because I've seen the likes of Morgan Freeman and Robert De Niro act in their old age and they still have the fire. Yet, an old assassin surrounded by a bunch of younger actors is underperforming. Also, some characters who were supposed to contribute fully to the action just appeared once or twice, talked for the entire period and that was it.

Need I mention the scenes that looked and seemed very unreal. The scene where an ironing board was used to block bullets from another assassin got me reeling in shock. An agile female assassin couldn't shoot down a man with an ironing board for a shield and when she ran out of bullets, it took her almost a minute to take out the refill from her pocket. Why? Then there was the scene with a fake fire. Once I saw the very first flaw, the rest of the flaws kept coming. More or less like a domino effect.
The director's attempt to blend action and comedy results in a messy, uneven tone that fails to deliver on either front. The film's pacing is uneven with scenes that do not add up.
I guess one of the reasons why this movie struck the wrong cords is because it's supposed to be a fluffing action thriller film! There are assassins, there are mercenaries and there are the bad guys but where is the action? Where? I don't remember the last time a movie made me so bitter after seeing it but “Old Guy” certainly did.

## Recommendation
This was a terrible attempt at an action comedy film and I do not recommend it to anyone looking to watch an entertaining movie. The film lacks the originality and excitement that would make it stand out in the action-comedy genre, making it feel like a missed opportunity even with a good enough plot. I would give it a 3/10 rating.
