Celebrating 6 Years of Splinterlands: More Tips for beginners looking to dive into the SplinterVerse

in Splinterlands6 months ago

Hello and welcome to my blog!

Splinterlands is one of Hive's most popular web3 games, with many active players. We are celebrating 6 years of Splinterlands and I love to read and see other Hiveans playing it.

I used to get many questions on how to start this game and I still get occasional requests from people to teach them. I always ask them what's your motivation for playing. If it is just earning and not having fun you will not go much far. It will become a chore if you don't enjoy doing it. But if you love these types of games then you will surely love them and learn much faster.

I have said this in my previous posts too:

Many newbies in the game think only about the outcome and not so much about the process and learning the strategies and various abilities and rulesets, which is a huge problem. Just like in other aspects of life, the focus should be on learning the process and not focusing too much on the results, if the process is good, the results will eventually start to come in. It is easier said than done but it can be done by analysing every game we play, reading about various strategies, and compositions and testing them out on the battlefield.

I was fortunate to find it a couple of years ago when the game peaked in activity. Many new players joined the game back then and were learning the game from a lot of practice and battles. I used to watch a lot of YouTube tutorials as well and read posts which discuss best strategies.

Although the game has changed a lot in the previous two years, the battling fundamentals remained the same. And those videos are still relevant and teach you a lot of things about the game. I watched a tutorial similar to this one.

There is a lot of useful information on the official Splinterlands website as well. Have you gone through the Help page yet?

Trust me, you will learn a lot of things just by reading the different articles there. It is useful for even players like me. There is a list of all the rulesets and abilities too which will help you a lot. Learning about all the rulesets and knowing their icons from the heart helps you spend more time forming your lineup rather than reading it when the battle starts. Surely, you don't want to spend all your limited time just reading about the ruleset and abilities again and again.

The game has changed a lot since then and we have seen a lot of new things added to the game, how rating systems used to work. I saw the addition of another format. At that time, the Chaos edition was not even launched and I have seen two new additions. Chaos Legion and Riftwatchers. Both of them introduced so many new cards, abilities and rulesets. Since then I have joined a Guild and played many brawls. Although I am not as active there as I used to be.

One of the best places to practice more and play with the best players is the Tournaments. You can find free-to-enter tournaments there and can gain more experience. Even if you don't win, which might be the case most of the time as they are very competitive, you will still learn a lot of things. You will get to see all the meta strategies and interesting compositions and you can learn from them and try to implement them in your battles too.

Here are more helpful tips in easy-to-digest points, if you are interested in joining this game.

  • Practice, practice and practice (There is no shortcut to this, you just have to play the game for longer)
  • Join communities on discords, telegrams, Hive etc (If you are reading this, you have joined at least one of them. Explore more!)
  • Share your experience with others and blog on Hive. Also, take part in challenges like this (When you write and explain your strategies you will understand it much better, just try it.)
  • Don't get too attached to the result of the game and focus more on learning the strategies (As I said before, focus on the process not just on the results)
  • Rent your way up if you can't afford to buy cards (No need to buy a $150 card just rent them for much cheaper and see if it helps)
  • If you are feeling frustrated just take a rest and come back again the next day. Don't push too much, you will end up losing more!
  • Watch replays and don't skip them (Especially when you are trying new strategies and units)
  • Go to the help section of Splinterlands website and read all the resources!
  • Take part in tournaments and other challenges.
  • Join a Guild and play Brawls, which will help you get extra rewards.
  • Make friends and HAVE FUN! (This is the most important of them all)

Thanks for reading!
