Do Punishments Really Stop Crime?

Good day, people of Hive! Welcome to my blog. Today's topic is from Hive-Learners which says: Punishments. So let's dive in.

Truth is, when people talk about crime, one of the first things that comes to our minds is punishment. From a young age, we are taught that if we do something wrong or commit a crime, there will be consequences or punishment. In the society we live in, punishments such as imprisonment, life sentences, fines, and even the death penalty are used to discourage people from breaking the law or committing crimes. You see, if people know that they will be punished for committing a crime, they will avoid committing it.

To me, I believe punishments do work to some extent. But they are not enough on their own to stop crime completely. For example, someone who is thinking about stealing may decide not to steal because they will be afraid of the consequences. They will imagine what could happen if they are caught in the act. If I must say, punishment serves as a warning and helps maintain order in society.

And we have some people who do not care about the punishment for the crimes they commit. Some people, instead of repenting from their crimes because they have seen their fellow members being caught, still go ahead and commit those crimes.

However, if punishment were completely effective, crime would have disappeared long ago. But the reality is that many people still commit crimes even when they know the risks and punishments involved, just like I mentioned.

To be honest, there are several reasons why people still commit crimes. Some people commit crimes due to desperation, hunger, poverty, unemployment, and, to top it all, difficult living conditions can push or trigger individuals into criminal activities.

Some people know the risks of robbing a bank because they know that if they are caught, there will be punishment, yet they still go ahead and rob the bank because it is their choice. Honestly, committing a crime is our choice because we have the right to refuse to commit one.

Another reason why I think people commit crimes is because they believe they are smart enough not to get caught.

I have never witnessed it in real life, but from the movies I watch, whenever they catch a thief, they give the thief jungle justice immediately by setting him or her ablaze.

Just like what I heard from a fellow student of mine, they caught a thief who went to steal in a student's house/area. People caught one of the thieves because he was not smart enough to run away like the second one, and they cut off his left ankle. When I heard about it, I felt bad for the thief, but then I remembered how some thieves went to a student's house to steal and, because the guy refused to release his phone, they butchered him and left with all his belongings. Thank God he did not die, and they were able to rush him to the hospital.

Just like I'm saying, punishment remains an important part of the justice system because it protects society and holds offenders accountable for their actions.

In conclusion, punishments do work, but only to a certain extent. Punishments can help maintain law and order. Therefore, while punishment is necessary, society and the government should also focus on solving the problems that lead people into committing crimes.

I love the fact that you concluded by saying government should put things in place in order to avoid people committing crimes.

Yes, government should really focus on the reason why crimes are happening and work and look for the solutions.

If the government provides employment and keeps the youth busy I believe the rate of crimes will reduce so thank you for pointing that out

Yes, if the government does that the rate of crimes will surely reduce.

Yeah, the government really needs to put certain things in place so people would have something doing, the effects of unemployment and poverty on the citizens alone is enough. Also, they should make sure that punishments are really enforced and no one is above the law

Thanks for sharing.
💕💕💕

Yes, it enough. Because the reason why there's crimes everyday is because people are unemployed and need to survive.

Sure Mama

Punishment is there to help stop crimes, which it has helped discourage many from engaging in crimes. But people, for some various reasons still engage in crimes, whether these reasons are hunger, poverty, lack, or trying to prove a point. Yes, if the government will do better to make live more liveable for their citizens, it would bring about reduction in crimes.

Yes, punishment has helped make people to stop committing crimes because they're scared to be caught and put to prison. But despite the fact that there's punishment for people committing crimes people are still committing it.
