Earth of oblivions.No.3: Reminiscences of the old Spanish colony building/ Tierra de Olvidos. No.3: Reminiscencias del Edificio de la Antigua Colonia Española [ENG-ESP]

There are sites that resist dying even though they seem forgotten. This is the case of the old building that belonged to the Society of Spanish settlers of San Lorenzo de Avocate, my town, a small town of Mayabeque, Cuba.

Known as "La Colonia", dates from the second half of the 19th century and was a meeting place as a private club for the descendants of Spanish citizens who settled in the town and threw root on this land.

The ostentatious eagerness of the new landowners allowed the construction of this property following the patterns of neoclassicism in terms of its great grandiloquence and sobriety of the Greek and Roman constructive ideals. In this case, the Fronton is evidenced, the design of the imitative columns of the Greek orders, the harmony of straight lines and their balance.Obviously, it should be understood that this stylistic invasion from Europe was reinterpreted in the Caribbean, with a certain temporal lag, and some contributions were incorporated according to the weather, the transcultural materials and tastes that were profiling an architectural of the island.

According to investigations and photographic data that I will share in the next post, inside, its immense Roji-Blancos mosaics hall, hosted dances, presentation ceremonies in society, concert competitions. With the passage of time he changed his nominal status and began to appear within the scriptural acts as a white society. His facade intended to compete with the beauty of other local properties. In the pediment can still be seen, and relieved, the social group's own shield. Then it was a place of preference of the landowners and merchants of Galician, Andalusian and Basque origin, the main lines that defined the local idiosyncrasy.

After the revolution, he opened for the people in general and their main social function continued to be cultural;happening dances, concerts of great figures of the musical panorama such as the bolerists Orlando Contreras, Tejedor and Luis and Benny Moré himself. Also its V portal welcomed the "domino league" as a hobby of each weekend. Much closer to my memory was the site of the “La Española” disco where I was going to dance every Friday and Saturday of my adolescence until it closed the public and time and the disuse granted him the condition of building in danger of collapse.

A few days ago I was touring the outside of the colony to take some photos but I could not take any image closely because the fence was closed. In my tour I evoked the splendor that I came to see in his rooms, his giant mirror that doubled the living room creating an illusion magnifying the experience of going to dance to the colony, his spider lamp with his elaborate pieces of glassware, the beautiful inherited bars of the Basque goldsmiths, the patio that functioned as cabaret under the stars.Today there is no mirror, no spider lamp, the dust covers the mosaics ...

There are sites that resist dying and despite their apparent destruction, they remain in people's memory.Avocate is a town of nostalgic, people who spend hours dreaming with a bright and prosperous past. Aguacate resists forgetting and I, with each vicinity, insist on not letting the legacy die and sharing the beauty of the buildings that have been part of the historical future of the people and that deserve to be known and remembered.Talking about them is a good starting point, denying their oblivion, finding spaces before sensitive eyes, looking for that empathy ...

I thank each person who has stopped to read this brief nostalgic relief, I also hope that they can leave their comments. It will be a pleasure to read them.

Until a next post.
Hugs of light !!!

Thanks to you for passing and commenting

Despite the years that the building has the design details and decorations are appreciated, the columns and door frames show a notable influence of neoclassical design.

Greetings!

Greetings !!! And thanks for passing and commenting

Your post beautifully captures the soul of "La Colonia" and the memories tied to its fading grandeur. It’s incredible how architecture can hold so much history, from its neoclassical influences to the cultural events that once filled its halls.

I fully agree. It is wonderful as architecture supports history, our history and our memories. That is the magic of the buildings, its narrative.
Thanks for passing and commenting.Nice day
