These friendly and always noisy yellow-crowned parrots (Amazona ochrocephala) have several common names; in addition to the one I've included in the title of this post, people also call them "golden parrot", "yellow-crested parrot", "Amazon parrot", and even simply "large parrot". The truth is that they are quite abundant birds throughout the year throughout our country. Their song is cheerful, and they often seem to be conversing among themselves. In fact, years ago it was very common for them to be domesticated (it still happens today, but on a much smaller scale), and it was common for these parrots to learn to imitate people's voices at home and develop a wide vocabulary. What I have always questioned about domesticating these birds is that, in addition to depriving them of a free life in the wild, the way they were captured was by stealing the young birds from their nests, thus leaving the parents in a state of absolute sadness. Fortunately, the capture and trade of these birds is now prohibited and punishable by law. However, cases of domestication are still seen, especially in rural areas. Let's hope that one day this will no longer happen.
Estas simpáticas y siempre ruidosas cotorras de le corona amarilla (Amazona ochrocephala) tienen varios nombres comunes; además de el que he colocado en el título de este post, también las personas llaman "lora real", "lora copete amarillo", "loro amazónico" e incluso simplemente "loro grande". Lo cierto es que son aves bastante abundantes durante todo el año en proactivamente toda la superficie de nuestro país, su canto es alegre y muchas veces parecen estar conversando entre ellas. De hecho, años atrás era muy común que fuese domesticadas (hoy en día sigue sucediendo, pero a mucha menor escala) y era algo común que estos loros aprendiesen a imitar la voz de las personas en casa y llegaban a tener un vocabulario amplio... Lo que yo siempre he cuestionado respecto a domesticar estas aves es que, además de ser privadas de una una vida libre en la naturaleza, la forma de capturarlas era hacerlo robando las aves jóvenes de los nidos, dejando así a los padres en situación de absoluta tristeza. Afortunadamente, ahora la captura y comercio de estas aves está prohibida y penada por las leyes. Sin embargo, aún se ven casos de domesticación especialmente en zonas rurales. Esperemos que algún día esto ya no suceda más.
The birds whose photos I'm sharing with you today, I found just half a kilometer from the edge of town. As you can see, they were perched on the branches of an old, dead tree and looked quite beautiful against the clear blue sky. The truth is, I was taking photos of other birds (some whistling herons) when they flew up to the tree and began to look at me with some curiosity... Now that's what I call luck! I had two different species of birds at my disposal in the same place, at a relatively short distance and with very good natural light... I hope to continue having opportunities like these, since the rainy season seems to be ending and good months for taking bird photos are coming.
Las aves cuyas fotos comparto con ustedes hoy, las encontré apenas a medio kilómetro de las márgenes del pueblo y, tal como se puede apreciar, se encontraban perchadas en las ramas de un viejo árbol seco y lucían bastante hermosas contrastando con lun limpio cielo azul. La verdad es que me encontraba haciendo fotos de otras aves (unas garzas silbadoras) cuando ellas llegaron volando al árbol y comenzaron a observarme con cierta curiosidad... ¡A eso le llamo tener suerte!... Tuve a mi disposición dos especies de aves distintas en un mismo lugar, a relativa corta distancia y con muy buena luz natural... Espero seguir teniendo oportunidades como estas, pues la temporada de lluvias parece estar marchándose y vienen buenos meses propicios para hacer fotos de aves.

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape v3.7
