The Jonah Hex action figure from McFarlane Toys is compared with the Mattel DC Universe Classics Hex.
While Todd McFarlane has always been accused of favoring "only" Batman and fringe versions of characters, I still appreciate that he produces relatively early some of the not-too-mainstream characters that not all young comic book readers will know.
Jonah Hex may be one of those characters.
As with most McFarlane toys, this comes in the 7-inch scale, although his head is noticeably small. Smaller in fact than the supposedly-shorter 6-inch scale Mattel Hex, as seen in the pictures in the latter part of this article.
The face sculpt is great.
The weapons are amazing! And what's more, you can put them all into the figure! A very favorable feature that this collector is very happy with.
The rifle seems to be normally meant to be put into the horse's saddle, although there is an extra place on Hex's back where another weapon can be placed. Although in real life, isn't a rifle too heavy to be placed on the belt?
The horse is great too and is fully articulated, with joints in all the real-life joints of the feet. The head also has great rotation, and the tail is also movable.
The saddle was also made with care and has good details.
Here is McFarlane Hex with Mattel Hex.
Mattel Hex's rifle can be installed on his back. Lost his pistol unexplainably, so now he sports a futuristic pistol from General Thrawn. Makes sense since he went to the future, after all.
Here are the two's ugly mugs placed side by side. Horrific and absolutely fantastic.
It would have been good for the McFarlane one to have those "injun" feathers. But then, that gives the Mattel one a certain irreplaceable charm.
All in all, these figures make this collector want to stay alive for much longer so that they can be enjoyed thoroughly. It's good to be Alive and Thriving!
