I think the popular saying ‘Politics is a dirty game’ is what has ruined the image of politics till this very day. Even fresh people that just wants to enter the game of politics are entering with this mindset. They are ready to play dirty because they feel like that is how it is meant to be. It doesn’t even have to be on a national level, even as low as high school prefects or university excos. You will see that they would go any length to attain power and secure the seat they are eyeing.

Let me use this particular one as example; My school mother in the university was vying for the post of the Vice President back then. You guys will not believe that she was reached out to by an anonymous caller, and then threatened to step down from the post. It was so crazy that even her dad told her that he was having scary dreams and begged her to leave the post for them. At what length will people actually go to attain power?! This is a person that actually had good intentions and was ready to make a change. I was so angry and just wished there was something I could do about it.

HAVE I EVER ENGAGED IN POLITICS BEFORE?

Not really. Honestly, politics has never been my forte, but I have always been indifferent towards it. There was a time in my life I found politics interesting; you know the campaigns, manifestos, banters, and so on was so fun to see (asides from the higher level where they add a sprinkle of violence though). When I was in secondary school, I wanted to contest for the post of social prefect. ‘How hilarious of me!’, you must think.

For someone as socially awkward as me, you’d think I was a clown in my past life. Actually, I did it to just challenge myself, that I am much more than the limit I have made for myself in my own head. I wasn’t intense with my campaign because I wasn’t crazy about the post. Eventually, a teacher’s daughter in my class emerged the winner. She wasn’t even so social, I would have preferred our other competitor to win because she was actually very social and would have done so much with the position.

Y’all shouldn’t tell anybody oh! I cried my heart out that day ehn!. From that day, I run away from anything competition😂 I just prefer watching from afar, please.

Throughout my time in the university, I didn’t consider taking any political position, I was just uninterested. I participate sometimes though, when my faves are contestant and I believe in them.

WOULD I CONSIDER A CAREER IN POLITICS IF I HAD THE CHANCE?

No, I wouldn’t. I still feel like it’s not my thing, I don’t have mind for stress or toxicity. One person can not make a change, so I would just pass. I have seen situations where good people actually go into politics ready to do the right thing, but their corrupt colleagues wouldn’t even allow them. They will frame them, raise a negative narrative about them, and we have heard to poisoning stories as well. So, even with the fact that there is a lot I wish I could change and know I’ll need power, I would not consider it because there are too many bad eggs.

THE ILLS OF POLITICS I WANT CHANGED

The fact that there is a lot to change only means that there is actually a whole lot wrong with the system. So, if I were in a position to change things about politics, I will totally revamp the system and I am talking about my country, Nigeria that I know much about. Those in their posts will have to treat is as a job. If they are not doing what they are meant to do, the next thing they will get is a warning letter and then a sack letter. Four years will not longer be a must.

They would not be treated like they are above anyone else. They are mainly in those posts to fulfil their duties, not fill up their filthy pockets. Any form of fund mishandling or embezzlement will be punished by deduction the missing money from their salaries. Everyone will be treated fairly and injustice will be reduced. Competent people will be chosen for the positions they are worthy to occupy. Not just because someone somewhere feels like it’s their turn to rule, it is not a monarchy system!

I really still have hope in Nigeria and I hope that someday, Nigerians will unanimously and sensibly choose someone worthy for the political posts in the country. I really do hope it gets better, for real.

Of course, it's not everyone that can venture into politics, it's onlu meant for the strong heart, a lot of people have interest in it though, but the fear of the people that have power more than they do is stopping them, just like the case of your school mother. me too I wish there will be a change in the politics in my country

I really hope that change comes soon 🥹
