I know that I’ve spoken about the weather multiple times this year already, but I don’t think that I’m the only one who has noticed that something is really wrong somewhere. We’re all just living with it but things are bad and we’re not taking adequate steps to make sure that we’re protected.
This year, we’re experiencing a lot of extreme weather, and it’s happening all over the world. No country is left out. While some countries are experiencing excess heat, others are suffering excess rain. And then there are those who are suffering natural disasters that are just bad enough to claim lives. We’re seeing this on a daily basis and we’re simply powerless against it.
For instance, here in Owerri, it’s beginning to look like rain has a bone to pick with us. This is the rainy season, but I can count on my hands the number of times it has fallen this year and I can tell you that I won’t run out of fingers. Funny enough, when it does fall, it never falls for long. Falling only for a few minutes, enough to wet the ground and make us think the weather would be cool.
Then, in the blink of an eye, it’s all gone. The heat would come back and be even more unbearable than before. It’s frustrating, really. Having to cope with such weather is frustrating. Being woken up in the middle of the night to intense heat just because power was interrupted or the fuel in the generator ran out is always a terrible feeling. And always a subtle reminder to switch to solar.
In other parts of Nigeria, Lagos for instance, the rain has been falling regularly. At least that’s based on the reports I’ve been getting. Maybe some places are also suffering the heat like I am.
Some other countries are experiencing intense heat as well, I’m sure. It’s so bad that some people are suffering heat stroke which can lead to really major health issues for them. Things just keep getting worse and there’s for now, there’s nothing we can do except endure because where do we start in our march to fix things? Mother Nature is fighting us now, we just have to stand and take the punch because if we try to fight back, we’ll end up losing woefully.
And while some countries can’t stop getting heat, others are suffering from too much rain. Places like Dubai where rain is their major problem to the point where entire towns and cities are covered in water. Lives have been lost and it’s really scary because no one knows why exactly it’s happening. Things are going wrong, the balance of nature is changing and we’re suffering for it.
So now, what happens when the rain finally decides to come back to Owerri? If by the end of April it’s still doing shakara, when it finally begins to fall heavily will there be an adverse effect? Are we going to have to suffer flooding as well? Our government has already listed out cities that are in danger of being flooded this season, and Owerri is part of them.
The truth is, no one knows tomorrow. We’re humans and we’ve been using the earth as we liked, poisoning it without a care in the world. And now, the earth is trying to cleanse itself and right things. At least that’s how I’m looking at it, that’s the only explanation that makes sense. We can only stay on the sidelines and watch as everything unfolds, making sure that we don’t get swept away in the tides of change as well.
Hopefully, things will get better.
