When it comes to plastic pollution, we often think that our ocean is the place where most of the pollution and dumping is happening. Our ocean is indeed covered with lots of plastic waste, and we can see it floating in many places and affecting the living creatures in the oceans, but there is also a huge amount of pollution happening on land, too. Our landfill is filled with plastic waste, they don't decompose or break down into microplastics, and we can see it everywhere. The future is going to be even worse if this continues.
Compared to several years back, now our agricultural soil is also fully covered with microplastics. One of the recent studies mentioned how microplastics are inside our bodies and how much we consume every day. They also found that microplastics in human sperm are causing infertility in men. But because this plastic pollution is everywhere, we can easily also say that plants will also get affected because of this, and maybe we might be able to find microplastics moving inside the plant system too. When water is transported to all the parts of the tree, maybe microplastics can get carried along with that creating some diseases in plants, which will gradually affect us because we are also eating those plants.
Plastics are a bigger problem than harmful chemicals in our food
We think that we are using many harmful chemicals in our fertilizers, making it very bad for our health but these microplastics become even more deadly than the harmful chemicals being used in agriculture. Plastics contain harmful chemicals like BPA and BPS, they react with the soil and reduce the quality of the soil. They can even create several other problems if it is used continuously. These harmful chemicals, when reacted with our body, create a hormonal imbalance and also other problems related to fertility. It is not the case only for human beings and the same happens for even other living being, including plants.
The biggest problem here with people is that they either don't know the harmful effects of these plastics, or they still continue to use them in spite of the fact that it is creating harm to individuals. The food crops that we use in the soil absorb these microplastics and transfer them to humans in the form of food, which can become cancer-causing agents in the future. We have to be very careful with that.
