During my elementary school days, I loved watching horror movies. While my mates were watching Dora the Explorer, I was busy exploring scary movies. I was introduced to them at a very young age. My big cousin, who lived with us for a very long time, was a big fan of horror movies. It was as if she injected us with something that made us fall in love with scary movies. Every night when the birds were asleep and the crickets croaked, we would sit in the living room, make a big circle around the laptop, and watch a scary movie. The world wasn't as it is now. Technology wasn't so developed. Most of us didn't have cell phones so we’d often kill boredom by spending quality time together. When my cousin noticed that the horror movies were getting too crazy, she’d mix it with cartoons and anime. Oh! Yes, she also made me love anime. I remember watching Naruto on her laptop.
Even though the movies were really scary, it wasn't a big deal because my siblings were watching with me. We’d scream our lungs out, jump, and hold each other’s hands. After every scary scene, loud laughter would always fill the room. Horror movies hangout with my big cousin were going well until we watched Mama (a very old scary movie) and another one (I don’t remember the title.)
That night was different from any other movie night. We had never watched two scary movies in a night until that day. I don’t know what evil spirit came over my cousin but she made us watch two scary movies. The movies were on another level of scariness. They were unlike any others we had ever seen. I still remember the title of one of the movies- Mama. My memories of that day are flawed but i remember a little details of the movie. In the movie, someone died, and came back to haunt their neighbors and family. What made it more scary was that one of our neighbors had passed away that same day.
Every time the curtains blew or there were strange noises in the movie, we got really scared. After what felt like an eternity of “heart pounding” sessions, we came to the end of the day’s movie night. Now, it was time for us to sleep. My parents slept in a different room, while we the children, slept in separate rooms. The ladies had their room, while we, the boys, slept in a different room. But that day, we all agreed to move our beds to the living room and sleep there.
Everything was going fine until my mom turned off all the lights. Immediately after the last light went off, I could have sworn I saw a shadow on the ceiling. The shadow ran from one end to another. I kept my cool and pretended like i didn't see anything because my siblings were with me. I managed to lay my back down, and kept staring at the ceiling, hoping to catch the sight of the shadow. Within 15 minutes, my siblings and cousins were already asleep. “Didn't we watch the same scary movies. Did they not see the shadow?”
As soon as I finally fell asleep, the violent wind woke me up. The windows began to blow and shake as if something was controlling them, just like in the movies I had watched. I was so scared to open my eyes, but when I did, I saw a shadow standing in front of my parents’ room. I shut my eyes tight and hoped that it was my imagination playing pranks on me and hoped that when I opened them again, the shadow must have disappeared, but to my surprise, when I did, I saw the shadow still standing there.
Immediately, I screamed. My mom rushed out and turned on the lights. It turned out that it was my dad standing in front of the door. Arghhh! My heart almost jumped out of my chest.
Of course, I was the center of all jokes for the next couple of days. I saw it coming. I stopped watching horror movies. Okay, I’ll tell the truth- my parents banned me from watching them. I replaced horror movies with anime.
