A proverb says, “Where there is a will, there is a way” Having said this, I can define motivation as the inner strength to keep thriving irrespective of the obstacles and challenges life throws at us. Motivation begins with that single step and decision that I will never give up. I will never quit, no matter what the case may be.
First, the question is, why do I need motivation? There must be a reason for seeking motivation. Am I starting a new project? Trying to make life decisions, marital, or career-wise. After this is settled, I set my goals.
For me, I start with setting SMART goals, which are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. This acronym keeps me boosted and thriving all the time. I also keep tabs on my progress through my checklist. This way, I stay motivated. This is because a “journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step”
Then, if for any reason I face challenges and am stuck while pursuing my set goals, I go back to the drawing board and start crossing my T's and dotting my I’s. I will go further to measure my progress through my checklist, and probe into the things I have done. Are there any mistakes that I need to correct? If yes, I retrace my steps, make the corrections and rebound.
Again, because we are human, I may face situations that may weigh me down in the pursuit of my goal. No man is an island, they said, and a tree cannot make a forest. In this context, I will reach out to family and friends and seek support.
However, sometimes I find strength in celebrating my successes over the year. I do this through weekend relaxation with my family and friends, storytelling, poetry and listening to hip-hop, country classics and jazz to keep me thriving.

Furthermore, in my very low moments, I do put up a call to a priest and seek his guidance and counselling before one will enter a journey of no return. That way, the priest will bathe me with words of encouragement and motivational talks that will enable me to pick up my pieces and continue thriving.
In conclusion, when I need motivation, I preview my goals and borrow strength from my successes to rebound. I also reach out to family and friends, and when it's gloomy, I call up a priest. This is because I am only a human, and it is okay to be down, but the ability to make the necessary move to rebound in tandem with the statement” Winners never quit and quitters never win” gives me the needed push to continue staying alive to my goals and thriving.
