Hello, music community!!!!
I think we would all agree. If we were asked to define 90's music in one word, I'm sure we would say: alternative. And certainly the variety of styles and trends that closed the 20th century correspond to this concept. The voices, especially the female ones, rose up to gain a space within what was already seen as a market practice: music made by young people and for young impulsive people who were willing to eat the world.

Rock&roll did not manage to break away from this path and the new tendencies began to penetrate with more and more mediatic proposals, the typical image evolved (or not, according to our own perspective), and the lyrics and sound flirted with fusion in a general way. However, there were some defenders of their creative autonomy, besides being immersed in the commercial wave, women who had, within their discourse, that rebellious breath, the understanding of their poetics to generate polemic, to impact their time, to speak openly in their catharsis.

The female singer-songwriters of the time knew how to place doses of lyricism between the harsh chords of the guitars of the hard bands, turning their emotional universe into works of rock.

In my playlist, three of these carefree and deeply committed women stand out with their style and stage personality. For this #tttt, to which our friend @ablaze summons us weekly, I bring just a panoramic view. These were my iconic teenage girls, all the spirit that corresponded to this rebellious period was found in their songs.


The first tune corresponds to the girl with the peculiar stage performance, co-promising and direct lyrics: Alanis Morissette
You Oughta Know



One of the albums I enjoyed the most in my adolescence was Jagged Little Pill by this Canadian messosoprano. Within that compendium of rough and well conceived songs according to her cathartic style was You Oughta Know, the anthem of spite and rage that marked the 90s. With a sarcastic tone, it expresses the pain and frustration of women. The intensity of the lyrics is combined with Morissette's heart-wrenching and heartbreaking vocal delivery, typical of Morissette, which encodes that empowerment under the veil of vulnerability, but with that pain expressed in a raw form and with lyrics written without filters in the language.

You Oughta Know is a song of self-affirmation, culturally significant in that it proposed that expressive opening that other singers of the genre would later take as a reference to express their anger and frustration through music.


And if it's all about uncovered emotions, Joan Osborne has another prized spot on my list. The second tune for your consideration is Let's Just Get Naked.



Joan Osborne's song Let's Just Get Naked has a reflective undertone about human relationships, tedium and the search for balance in a couple in an act of reunion with the most genuine emotions. Naked, although it sounds literal in appearance within the body of the song, also contains a certain metaphorical virtue and suggests the necessary honesty, authenticity and transparency in the dialogue; it is an invitation to feel comfortable with vulnerability in front of the other. Osborne conciliates the frustration of the daily frustration with the inevitable face of routine, appeals to good humor, to the best energy.


Finally, I propose to play If It Makes You Happy by Sheryl Crow



This song proposes a paradoxical discourse with a lyrical approach to the happiness-sadness duality in our daily existence. The lyrics go through a description of contradictory experiences and emotions, suggesting that what makes us happy does not always free us from sadness. This piece also evokes, nostalgically, the past and searches for meanings in popular culture codes. However, it suggests the disconnect between the desire to be happy and our actual emotional states. It touches on themes of personal acceptance, authenticity, lingering dissatisfactions with an inquisitive eye.


These controversial girls did know how to make an impact, despite the radiant packaging with which they presented themselves, with that restrained fury, sometimes reflective, from a sonic and lyrical-compositional point of view. Not for nothing were they representatives of a generation that still keeps them on a pedestal: mine.

Hola, comunidad musical!!!
Creo que todos estaremos de acuerdo. Si nos pidieran definir la música de los 90 en una palabra, estoy segura que diríamos: alternativa. Y ciertamente la variedad de estilos y tendencias que cerraron el siglo XX corresponden a este concepto. Las voces, y en especial las femeninas, se alzaron en pro de ganar un espacio dentro de lo que ya se avistaba como práctica de mercado: música hecha por jóvenes y para jóvenes impulsivos que estaban dispuestos a comerse el mundo.

El rock&roll no logró deslindarse de esta senda y las nuevas tendencias comenzaron a penetrar con propuestas cada vez más mediáticas, la imagen típica evolucionó (o no, según entendamos desde nuestra propia perspectiva), las letras y el sonido conquetearon con la fusión a modo general. Sin embargo, existieron algunas defensoras de su autonomía creativa, amén de estar inmersas en la ola comercial, mujeres que tuvieron, dentro de su discurso, aquel hálito rebelde. la comprensión de su poética de generar polémica, impactar en su tiempo, hablar sin tapujos en su catarsis.

Las cantautoras de la época supieron colocar dosis de lirismo entre acordes ásperos de las guitarras de las bandas hard, convirtiendo su universo emocional en obras de rock.

Dentro de mi playlist destacan tres de estas féminas desenfadadas y profundamente comprometidas con su estilo y personalidad escénica. Para este #ttt, al que semanalmente nos convoca el amigo @ablaze, traigo apenas una panorámica. Estas fueron mis chicas icónicas de adolescencia, todo el espíritu que correspondía con este período rebelde lo encontraba en sus canciones.

You Oughta Know



Uno de los discos que más disfruté en mi adolescencia fue Jagged Little Pill de esta messosoprano canadiense. Dentro de aquel compendio de temas rudos y bien concebidos según su estilo catársico estaba You Oughta Know, el himno del despecho y la rabia que marcó la década de los años 90. Con tono sarcástico, expresa el dolor y la frustración de la mujer. La intensidad de la letra se conjuga en entrega vocal desgarradora y desgarrada, típica de Morissette, que cifra ese empoderamiento bajo el velo de la vulnerabilidad, pero con ese dolor manifiesto de forma cruda y con una letra escrita sin filtros en el lenguaje.
You Oughta Know es un canto de autoafirmación, significativo culturalmente por cuanto propuso esa apertura expresiva que luego otras cantantes del género tomarían como referente para manifestar su ira y frustración desde la música.


Y si de emociones al descubierto se trata, Joan Osborne tiene otro lugar apreciado dentro de mi lista. El segundo tune que pongo a su consideración es Let's Just Get Naked.



La canción de Joan Osborne Let's Just Get Naked tiene un trasfondo reflexivo sobre las relaciones humanas, el tedio y la búsqueda del equilibrio en la pareja en un acto de reencuentro con las emociones más genuinas. Desnudarse, aunque suene literal en apariencias, dentro del cuerpo del tema también encierra cierta virtud metafórica y sugiere la necesaria honestidad, autenticidad y transparencia en el diálogo; es una invitación a sentirse cómodos con la vulnerabilidad ante el otro. Osborne concilia la frustración cotidiana con el inevitable rostro de la rutina, apela al buen humor, a la mejor energía.


Por último propongo darle play a If It Makes You Happy de Sheryl Crow.



Es un paradójico discurso el que nos propone este tema con un abordaje lírico sobre la dualidad felicidad-tristeza en nuestro existir cotidiano. La letra transita por una descripción de experiencias y emociones contradictorias, sugiriendo que lo que nos hace felices puede, o no, liberarnos de la tristeza. Esta pieza también evoca, nostálgica, el pasado y busca significdos en códigos de la cultura popular. Sin embargo, sugiere la desconexión entre el deseo de ser felices y nuestros estados emocionales reales. Da pinceladas respecto a temas aceptación personal, autenticidad, insatisfacciones persistentes con una mirada inquisitiva.


Estas chicas polémicas sí supieron impactar, a pesar del envase radiable con el que se presentaron, con esa furia contenida, en ocasiones reflexiva, desde el punto de vista sonoro y lírico-compositivo. No por gusto fueron representantes de una generación que aún las mantiene en el pedestal: la mía.

Con el ánimo de que se sientan identificados con estos temas y al menos mi breve reseña les provoque a reflexión, me despido hasta otra oportunidad. Sería hermoso si este análisis también condujera a un diálogo de retroalimentación mediante sus comentarios. Serán muy bien recibidos.

I'm so happy I lived my teenage days while these girls were at their peak! I don't want to sound like some grumpy old guy, but I didn't hear anything better than the music that was made in the late '80s and '90s... The golden era of pop, rock, and alternative music, while MTV meant MusicTV! 😃

Love all 3, and I think I had all 3 in at least 1 tape mix... 😂 Maybe instead of "Let's Just Get Naked", I had "One of Us", from Joan... 🙂

We agree, Alanis is my number 1, so much that looking for a song of Jagged Little Pill I didn't know which one to choose jjjj. They are all magnificent !!!!
Miss Osborne really had her hit with One of Us and it's a track I love, but I preferred to also address the discourse of these aggressive women in terms of confessional from the music, that's why I went for Let's Just get ...

Además es una época en la que el arte entero se volcó hacia esa expresión manifiesta de la emoción . Ello se tradujo en la riqueza de estilos, conceptos, formatos y en la música potenció estéticas diversas. Creo que la enajenación fue un camino que se hizo público per se,si tenemos en cuanta que todo acto de creación es un hecho enajenado, al menos así lo creo y experimento.

Coincido totalmente con todo lo que dices que en la publicación, porque las mujeres de los 90, eran fuertes y decididas en una sociedad dominada aún por los hombres, como sucedía en la música también.
