Titmouse nest in a mailbox | Phone Photography Contest - #64

in Feel Good2 days ago

Hello, friends!

This story began in the spring of 2020. Then, for the first time, tits chose a mailbox nailed to a fence to build a nest.

For the sixth summer now, every year, twice a season, tits build a nest in an old mailbox, lay eggs, hatch and feed the chicks.

In mid-April, nest building begins. The bottom of the box is lined with moss, which the birds bring from the forest, located a couple of kilometers from the village. Then the tits line the nest with dog down, fortunately there are many dogs in the village and they are moulting in the spring. Around mid-May, the birds begin to lay eggs. I took this photo of the nest with a clutch of eggs on May 23.

When I opened the mailbox lid on June 4th, I saw that new life was in full swing there; the chicks heard the rustle of the lid being lifted and opened their bright yellow beaks, demanding food.

On June 7, the chicks had already gained significant feathers and were patiently waiting for their parents to arrive with food.

When I looked in the mailbox on June 10th, the chicks had feathered even more and were no longer reacting to the smartphone.

On June 11th, tit chicks, easily recognizable by their coloring, sat huddled close to each other in a nest in a mailbox.

And finally today, practically adult birds are sitting in the mailbox. I think that most likely in a few more days the grown chicks will leave their cozy home and fly away around the area.

But while the chicks are in the nest, the parents tirelessly bring them food.
