Some foreigners often say, "Before, I only heard about Cuba in the news or when I studied World History in high school." Then they ask, "What is it like to live in Cuba?" The only famous things I know are Che Guevara, rum, and cigars. Cuba is more than that, and in this blog, I will share some of its cultural details with you.

Nowadays, there is no typical definition of the Cuban family. Families are very diverse: from families with two mothers or two fathers, to those formed by grandparents and grandchildren, which are becoming more common. Many families are incomplete, with a single mother raising her children. There is also social complexity in families made up of adolescent girls married to men much older than them, a phenomenon that used to be rare but is now normal.

The role of grandparents has also changed. They used to be very respected family members and close to their grandchildren. But nowadays, you can see them in two roles: taking on the responsibilities of parents because the parents emigrate in search of economic improvement, or being mistreated by their own family.
Children in Cuba usually grow up without their biological father or are raised alongside "parents with economic attention," who are men that only provide money but no emotional support. Therefore, family support generally falls on mothers or grandparents.

In Cuba, you can find families of up to five generations living under the same roof. Today, this is not as common as in the past because this situation has decreased with emigration. What you mostly see are houses or apartments where grandparents live alone or take care of their grandchildren.
The most important and valued celebrations remain New Year's Eve, Christmas Eve, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and birthdays. Traditions like the Three Kings' Day are also maintained when families gather to take children out. Cuban traditions hold on, but with difficulty. Additionally, some new foreign festivities, such as Halloween, have been incorporated into Cuban culture.

Solidarity among neighbors still holds important value in Cuban culture, especially among the elderly and longtime friends. Although it has been lost among younger generations due to economic and social needs, it still exists, such as lending money without rushing repayment.

Regular gatherings among friends include playing dominoes, listening to music, and drinking together. Discotheques are also popular, as well as spending a whole day at the beach. In some areas, gatherings are organized to prepare "caldoza," a stew with various root vegetables and meat.
One of the biggest challenges in Cuban society is the struggle to obtain food and medicine. These shortages test family values, encouraging solidarity among neighbors and friends to overcome difficulties.

Not all young people today hate being Cuban, as many think; rather, they reject the situation on the island, which is why they emigrate. This reality is not shown on national television because the goal is to present a positive and idealized Cuba in the media to avoid greater problems. But everyone here knows the "cultural details" that are not wanted to be shown.

Cultura de la familia cubana
Algunos extranjeros suelen decir "Antes solo oí hablar de Cuba en las noticias o cuando estudié Historia Universal en la secundaria". Luego preguntan "¿Cómo es vivir en Cuba?" Lo único famoso que conozco es al Che Guevara, el ron y los cigarros". Cuba es más que eso, y en este blog te cuento algunos de sus detalles culturales.

Hoy en día no hay una definición de familia cubana típica. Hay familias muy variadas: desde familias de dos madres o dos padres, hasta aquellas formadas por abuelos y nietos, que son cada vez más comunes. Muchas familias están incompletas, con una madre sola criando a sus hijos. También se observa una complejidad social en familias compuestas por adolescentes casadas con hombres mucho mayores que ellas, un fenómeno que antes era raro de ver y que ahora es normal.

El papel de los abuelos también ha cambiado. Antes eran miembros muy respetados en la familia y cercanos a los nietos. Pero, actualmente, puedes verlos en dos facetas: asumiendo los roles de padres y madres, porque los padres emigran en busca de mejoras económicas, o siendo maltratados por su propia familia.
Los niños en Cuba suelen crecer alejados de la figura paterna biológica, o son criados junto a "padres con atención económica" que son esos hombres que solamente están en la familia para aportar dinero y no emociones. Por eso, por lo general, el apoyo familiar recae en las madres o abuelos.

En Cuba, puedes encontrar hasta una familia de cinco generaciones viviendo bajo el mismo techo. Hoy en día ya no es tan abundante como en el pasado porque esta situación disminuyó con la emigración. Lo que mayormente verás aquí son casas o apartamentos donde viven abuelos solitos, o cuidando a sus nietos.
Las celebraciones más importantes y valoradas siguen siendo Fin de año, Nochebuena, Día de las Madres, Día de los Padres y los cumpleaños. También se mantienen tradiciones como Reyes Magos, cuando las familias se reúnen para pasear a los niños. Las tradiciones de Cuba se mantienen, pero con dificultad. Además, algunas nuevas festividades extranjeras, como Hallowen, se han incorporado a la cultura cubana.

La solidaridad entre vecinos sigue teniendo un valor importante en la cultura cubana, especialmente en las personas mayores y amigos de años. Aunque se ha ido perdiendo en las nuevas generaciones, por todas las necesidades económicas y sociales, aún se mantiene, como prestar dinero sin apresurar la devolución

Las reuniones habituales entre amigos incluyen jugar al dominó, escuchar música y beber juntos. También son populares las discotembas y pasarse un día entero en la playa. En algunas zonas se organizan encuentros para preparar "caldoza", un caldo con diferentes viandas que incluye carne.
Uno de los mayores desafíos que existe en la socieda cubana es la lucha por conseguir alimentos y medicamentos. Estas carencias ponen a prueba los valores familiares, fomentando la solidaridad entre vecinos y amigos para superar las dificultades.

No todos los jóvenes odian ser cubanos, como muchos piensan, sino que rechazan la situación que existe en la Isla; por eso emigran. Es una realidad que no verás plasmada en la televisión nacional, porque la idea es mostrar una Cuba positiva e idealizada en los medios para no provocar males mayores. Pero, todo el mundo aquí conoce los "detalles culturales" que no se quieren mostrar.
