Vintage holiday cards

In with the wonderful antique trade cards that my great aunt gifted to me there are also many postcard type greeting cards.

I own the cards and these have been scanned so that I can share them here

Easter seems to have been an occasion to send greeting cards. These are unused and depict Easter images.

The top card appears to show a young child asleep surrounded by images of springtime and Easter lilies. The fancy dressed rabbits seem to be bearing gifts.

On the card that shows a boy carrying a straw hat filled with colored eggs, on the bottom right it seems to say "COPYRIGHTED 1893 BY THE KNAFPC"

This springtime themed postcard depicting a girl with a basket of chicks and another basket filled with eggs was likely intended to be an Easter card.

There's a signature or text in the bottom right corner, though it's difficult to read clearly. It might say "Copyrighted 1891 by L. Prang & Co." which was a prominent lithography firm.

Both of these unused vintage postcards, have illustrations that depict young children dressed in winter attire amidst a snowy backdrop. They both appear to be from the same set of greeting cards, probably to be sent at Christmas time.

This image shows two small, fan-shaped Victorian Christmas cards, each featuring a different printed scene and a fluffy, dark brown border. They both have a small white tassel attached by a string.

Left: shows a swallow in flight, with its wings spread, against a light blue sky with some clouds.
"Bright & Merry Christmas" is written in adecorative script on the right side of the fan.

Right:
A serene pastoral landscape with cows and sheep grazing in a field beside a pond.

Fluffy fringed holiday cards with artwork depicting children.

Text on the left card reads: "WITH FOND LOVE AND BEST WISHES." along the left edge, and "FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR." at the bottom. There's also smaller text "Prinzessin Co" at the top left, and "Prang Designs. With Copyright." at the bottom right.

Text on the right card reads: "I WISH YOU A HAPPY CHRISTMAS." along the right edge, and "WITH ALL MY HEART" at the bottom. Smaller text "S. Hildesheimer & Co." is visible at the bottom left, and "Prang Design. With Copyright." is visible at the top right.

This image shows a vintage-style Christmas card, with"Buon Natale" (Merry Christmas in Italian) written at the top in cursive.

Do you send holiday cards in the mail? It has become a tradition of days gone by. Most of my greetings are done via text message, but I remember the delight of opening the mailbox to find it filled with hand addressed greeting cards!

Sort:

There are still these things. Some people collect (literally) stamps in their passports.

I know that in Japan, there's a lot of fancy stamps that can be used as souvenirs in a scrapbook or the like. That's a distant relative to these sorts of artefacts.

Of course, people still get holiday postcards, but I don't know how they travel through the mail.

Recently, I had an experience with postcards. I thought it was funny.

These objects are beautiful, and just like the advertising postcards you presented (at least I think it was you!) - these capture a time in history when everything could be a keepsake.

You are right, these greeting cards are part of the same collection as the advertising cards. Most all of them were from the early days of color printing. It's interesting to see what people choose to collect.

Those greeting cards are absolutely beautiful. In Cuba, there’s a tradition of sending them, especially Mother’s Day cards, filled with flowers and bright colors. They’re sent through traditional mail, though in recent years, with the rise of technology, that tradition has faded. When I was little, I gave many to my mom, grandmothers, aunts, and teachers. Thank you so much, Melinda, for sharing your memories and experiences. 😘🌹

Mother's Day was a big occasion to send cards, here too. I hope digital greetings do not completely replace the tradition of sending cards!

I agree whit you. 😘🌹

What beautiful designs 😍 I love cards with a holiday theme and these are beautiful in terms of drawing and color, I would like to have even one haha ❤️

I feel quite honored to have been given all of these. Each one is a treasure!

Nowadays, most of the greetings or holiday wishes are copy-paste!!

Pretty awesome collection. It must have brought back many old memories!

It is a great collection, isn't it? Especially since sending digital greetings on holidays has become much more common these days!

Yes. Indeed. A huge collection!

Like many I know, I used to send a LOT of Christmas cards. Through the years, the list got smaller and smaller till it was mostly just family and very close friends. Now, I have not sent any in several years. I always think about it and think "maybe this year I really will!".... but then mostly I don't, or just a handful. Like you, I used to LOVE getting cards in the mail and hanging them up around an inside door facing. It was just part of Christmas and the decor.

I have never seen any with the fringe. All of them are very nice, but those are very special.

It was part of the Christmas decor! I miss receiving cards, but I don't miss sending them.
The rising cost of postage killed the tradition of sending cards for many people.

I love them, they are real art no AI or else. You keep a treasure with you. I love the old days when the postman passed blowing his whistle announcing news for the family including those postcard. Very typical on Mother's day on my country like the hiver above just said. They are real fungible NFTs.

I think people still love seeing the postman arrive, even though these days he mostly brings advertisements!
I love having these early examples of color printing. They are treasures.

Hello, happy afternoon.
You have an excellent collection, and even more so these days, when we are losing such objects and everything is digital, they also look in excellent condition.
Maybe later on, you can lend them to be exhibited in a museum, since besides being beautiful, they reflect a part of the history of your country.

As examples of early color printing I hope they do have value to be exhibited someday! I've been happy to share them here.

I have not sent anything to anyone for quite some time. I haven't received them for years either.

The cost of buying a card and then paying for postage and needing to plan ahead makes it far easier to send digital greetings!

Did you know that <a href='https://dcity.io/cityyou can use BEER at dCity game to buy cards to rule the world.

I remember the delight of opening the mailbox to find it filled with hand addressed greeting cards!

Sadly this is mostly a memory... one of the people that used to send cards reliably now sends electronic cards. I dont care for them especially after he bragged about sending 400 with a subscription to a service that lets him send them to everyone on his phones address list with one click 🙄

Sending greeting cards used to take time, effort, planning and money! Digital greetings can be glanced at and deleted just as quickly as the amount of effort the sender put into them. They become pretty meaningless.

I was never much of a greeting card kinda guy. It always seemed to be a cop out when you go and buy a sentiment, make it your own and make that your connection with someone. Silly I know.

Those are classic and neat pieces of art though. Wonderful how you have collected them over the years and how that is a nice connection with your great aunt!

Enriching gift for sure.

I used to send greeting cards to all my elderly relatives because I knew they valued them, but they have all passed on and now I'm part of the elderly generation in the family!

I'm happy to have these digitized. Same with the old family photos. It's easy to get buried in the paper copies

Beautiful cards I must say 😊

Thanks!
