How I made cassava balls

One thing I love most about visiting my mom’s village is reconnecting with traditional foods that remind me of home, simplicity, and childhood memories and that especially come out fresh from the farm . On my recent trip, I got some fresh cassava, and I couldn’t resist the urge to make a snack I hadn’t had in a long time—Cassava balls.

This simple yet delicious treat holds a special place in many Nigerian homes, and it is also sold here in the east aa street food. And today, I’ll be sharing how I made mine step by step:

So first off, I get the cassava ready, peel the cassava skin, wash it properly and set it aside

Next I take it to the mill to grind it properly and below is how it looks after grinding it

So next I pour in the casava in a bag with tiny holes to drain the water off it until a it looks and feels dry

After that I start taking it out of the bag and pressing it with my hands to ensure that it is well drained

At this point I was sure the water was drained so I put the casava in a bowl and set other ingredients ready. Now this only needs a few ingredients.

---Ingredients

  • 1 medium size onion
  • 2 tablespoons pepper
  • 3 cooking spoons oil for frying
  • Salt to taste

Next thing was to mix the ingredients into the cassava so I started by pouring in the pepper and salt

Next thing was the onions and then I stirred them in properly to blend in with the cassava.

Next was to mold it in the shape I wanted and set it aside for frying

So I heat up the oil in my pan and start frying them till they turn golden brown and crunchy enough

Below is what we have after frying, very nice looking and delicious

Making a traditional dish from the scratch is really satisfying especially when they come out as fresh ingredients directly from the farm and harvested yourself. I was really happy for making this Cassava balls, it was exactly what I wanted and I enjoyed it so much.

I hope you enjoyed the process too, and see you all next time 🤗
