"Gente sin swing", no es solo un título, es una un diagnóstico de la sociedad Cubana, una cirugía a corazón abierto y escrito sin miedo a la censura. Guillermo Carmona, uno de los narradores cubanos más agudos de su generación, crea en este libro de relatos un mosaico vibrante y desgarrador, de la Cuba contemporánea, en tiempos de "Período Especial". Una de las tantas épocas dificiles que ha vivido el cubano.
The characters wandering through these pages are, indeed, "people without swing," individuals who have lost the rhythm, the beat of their seemingly insignificant lives. For them, the joyful, vital cadence of son or salsa has been shattered, replaced by the discord of survival, disillusionment, waiting, and hopelessness. The "swing" these characters lack is a powerful metaphor. It can represent the loss of values and ideals, the inability to connect with others, or the daily struggle in an economy of scarcity. Carmona does not judge; he observes and exposes with a lucid gaze and a dark humor that seeps through the cracks of discontent. Los personajes que deambulan por estas páginas son, efectivamente, "gente sin swing", individuos que han perdido el ritmo, el compás de sus vidas aparentemente insignificantes, para quienes la cadencia alegre y vital del son o la salsa se ha roto, siendo sustituida por la discordancia de la supervivencia, la desilusión, la espera y la desesperanza. El "swing" del que carecen estos personajes es una poderosa metáfora. The stories told here offer different registers, but they are united by a common feeling: disillusionment. We encounter characters like a man obsessed with the figure of an avant-garde German musician in the middle of the Special Period, a couple trying to survive monotony and suffocating heat, or young people navigating between reggaeton and the need to escape, either physically or mentally, from a suffocating reality. Here, we go to Havana's Malecón as if it were another character in the story.
Los relatos que aqui se narran ofrecen diversos registros, pero los une una sensación común: el desencanto. The Absurd is constantly present in every story. Many tales are based on Kafkaesque or surreal situations that reflect the everyday inconsistencies faced by the common citizen. And of course, humor is ever-present as a defense mechanism against a system that often makes no sense.
En estas páginas podrás encontrar una fisura entre la fachada turística y la realidad interna, entre el legado revolucionario del pasado y el pragmatismo (a veces cínico) del presente. El Absurdo está constantemente en cada historia. Muchos relatos se basan en situaciones kafkianas o surrealistas que reflejan las incoherencias cotidianas a la que se puede enfrentar el ciudadano común. Y por supuesto que no puede faltar el humor como mecanismo de defensa ante un sistema que, a menudo, no tiene sentido.
The desire to flee, to escape the island, is literally a fact, a "contagious fever," a constant pulse in the book—whether through the dream of emigrating, alienation through music, or refuge in eccentric inner worlds. The fresh, "shirt-off" prose is the book's greatest achievement. Written in a direct and sure style, sometimes colloquial and other times lyrical, but always faithful to the story and the truth. This writer handles dialogue masterfully, capturing the musicality and wit of Cuban speech, even when what is said is tinged with bitterness and pain.
El Deseo de fugarse, escapar de la Isla es, literalmente, un hecho, una "fiebre contagiosa", un latido constante en el libro, ya sea mediante el sueño de emigrar, la enajenación a través de la música o el refugio en mundos interiores excéntricos. La prosa fresca, a "camisa quitada", es el mayor acierto del libro. Escrito en un estilo directo y certero, a veces coloquial y otras veces lírico, pero siempre fiel a la historia y la verdad. This is a book that is easy to read if you are interested in the topic; it has dynamic writing and is not very long. Guillermo Carmona does not offer solutions or close wounds; he simply opens doors and windows so the world can observe the broken rhythms of a people who, in spite of everything, keep dancing, keep laughing, keep loving, and keep creating, even if it's on top of manure.
Gente sin swing no es un libro complaciente, es crudo y "digerirlo" no es tarea para cualquier lector. Es una lectura incómoda, necesaria y profundamente humana. Este es un libro que se lee con facilidad si te interesa el tema, posee una escritura dinámica y además no es muy extenso. Guillermo Carmona no ofrece soluciones ni cierra heridas, simplemente abre puertas y ventanas para que el mundo observe los ritmos quebrados de una gente que, a pesar de todo, sigue bailando, sigue riendo, sigue amando y sigue creando, aunque sea sobre el estiércol.
Gente sin swingis an essential book for anyone who wants to understand the nuances, contradictions, and complex life of contemporary Cuba, far from clichés, stereotypes, and eternal facades. A masterpiece of the contemporary short story that resonates far beyond the shores of this island. If you decide to read it, prepare to cry, to laugh, and above all, to reflect.
Gente sin swing es un libro imprescindible para quien quiera entender los matices, las contradicciones y la compleja vida de la Cuba actual, lejos de los clichés, los estereotipos y las eternas fachadas.
