Recently a star Indian Badminton Player has given a statement saying that unless you are rich don't make your children take up sports as a career. His argument is that only 1% of the people who take up sports are able to make real money and a lot of people end up doing mean jobs. And unless they have rich parents they cannot sustain more in the professional environment.

For example, I was looking for putting my daughter in the dominion classes and thus the fees are quite high. It's around 100$ for 8 days class in a month. For me it might be OK, but think about people who cannot afford it and thus the rich have access to the facility as well as it helps them to get all the catching and other things.
And again it's not about the facility. Say for example, you retire from the sports, you expect a government job but again the jobs are getting scarce and might take few years to get the job with very less salary. Now if you don't have much money sustaining with less money or no money gets a problem. And that's what the badminton star was telling it.
Now in India we don't have sports much played in the school. If you have to take up, you have to pay extra. Now not everyone can pay additional money other than the tuition fees and thus they have to just make their children study. But this is not the case in developed countries. In developed countries the sports are included in the curriculum and thus it will be free of cost. So they get the sports equipment or facility which usually is world class and get all the benefits.
So that's why in India it is called that the sports career is mainly for rich and not for the poor people.
