...MicroFiction: A 250 word story. My story is written using the word prompt "my dead cousin". The phrase is packed with suspense as one contemplates various scenarios. Which cousin? Under what circumstances? Did the cousin's death impact me or not? What about other family and friends. Was the death recent or just speaking of someone long passed. The angles are endless when approaching this prompt. I was thinking more of the effect my dead cousin had and will have. I share with you a short story along those lines.

For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 30 april 2025, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2722: my dead cousin.

Below is my story:

The sidewalk cafe buzzed while Sandra and Elise enjoyed brunch. Sandra paused. "Our dead cousin is reaching out. I kid you not!" The reaction she knew didn't take long.

"Which one? They've been dropping like flies this past two years!" Elise quipped.

"Hush, Elise. Have you no respect for the dead?"

Elise brought a morel of food to her mouth then chuckled. "Why should I? She's your dead cousin, not mine, and gone to whatever retched place is reserved for vexatious family members."

Saddened, Sandra fell silent, then. "Well, you'll be surprised to know that Great Cousin Penny, dad's side, left a large estate.

"What does that have to do with me? You know she forbade us to visit her home or attend family functions she hosted," Elise hissed, with an impatient scowl.

*Well, her attorney wrote to request our presence at the reading of her Will in our deceased parent's stead."

Surprised, Elise jerked her head back.

"I've warned you numerous times, Elise. Your temper is your nemesis. It wouldn't hurt to attend conflict resolution and anger management courses."

Disheartened, Sandra watched as Elise bristled. Her nose flared; face turned beet red like the steak she gorged before her fork landed on top.

"Maybe she wants to further humiliate me, Sandra. I'm NOT.THAT.GULLIBLE."

"Nonsense. I made peace with her. She spoke favorably of you independent spirit."

Elise smiled. "Well, it goes to show. Outlast your opponent; conflict resolved amicably. Result: Payable Upon Death!"

She beckoned. "Wine and dessert, please."

! [Benevolent Cousin Penny Bless Her Soul]

A continuación mi historia.

*"Te lo he advertido muchas veces, Elise. Tu temperamento es tu némesis. No te vendría mal asistir a cursos de resolución de conflictos y control de la ira».

Descorazonada, Sandra vio cómo Elise se erizaba. Se le encendió la nariz y la cara se le puso roja como el filete que se había zampado antes de que se le cayera el tenedor encima.

«Tal vez quiera humillarme aún más, Sandra. NO SOY TAN GULLIBLE».

"Tonterías. Hice las paces con ella. Habló bien de tu espíritu independiente «.

Elise sonrió. «Bueno, eso lo demuestra. Supera a tu oponente; conflicto resuelto amistosamente. Resultado: Se paga con la muerte».

Hizo una seña. «Vino y postre, por favor.»

I don't like Elise, but I understand her entirely ... legacy always goes from the wise to those with the ability to handle it, and one of the things necessary is courage and conviction. Elise has that. Reverence for mortal elders can only go to where they start playing God, at which point they must be resisted. What often happens is that when God reminds them of their mortality, and they need strong hands to carry their legacy, they come back to the one who will not bow to them.

You know, those are almost the exact words my husband said while we were discussing his legacy today. The fact that ancestors left huge chunks to him to take care of because he wouldn't do what was popular, but right, has caused a divide among his generation's cousins. I know he hurts because of this, but the elders placed confidence in him to keep their legacy intact (struggles to possess real estate after slavery) and put in place elements to secure its future.

Why him? they all grumble.

"We're all descendants. Each with the same opportunity to lead. Why weren't you chosen?" was his response.

Thanks so much for your visit and thoughtful analysis. I appreciate it and your support. Take care.

"We're all descendants. Each with the same opportunity to lead. Why weren't you chosen?"

That's it, echoing even greater wisdom from the Lord Jesus Christ.

For many are called, but few are chosen.

Joseph, who was the chosen among his brothers, had some trouble, too.

I'm dealing with this in certain aspects of my life as well ... in all spheres of life and eternity, the Lord knows what He is talking about.

Thank you!

I like reading fictions, Inheritance either makes the family value it or loss it. It was hurtful I have witnessed parents who are doing there best to work hard so they can leave a legacy for there children or there family but sad because those who are leave behind don't value it.

I have seen the same @ronimarie82. The thing is that the farther away from the legacy, the more likely that those currently in charge won't have the same intensity of feeling toward it. I have seen children sell their inheritance for small sums not realizing the true value. Just a get a quick buck. I understand the struggles to accumulate generational wealth for families. When one grows up without adequate resources, survival is key. Nothing much left. If parents happen to come into a small inheritance or additional monies, it's a precious thing to hold onto and try to grow it for the next generation.

You understand the concept perfectly. Thanks so much for your thoughtful insight. I appreciate it and your support. Thanks for stopping by. Take care.

Elise sounds like she doesn’t have a good enough relationship with her other cousins like she does with Sandra.

It must have really felt like mockery to her hearing they have to go instead of their deceased parents. Overall, it was a nice short story that was quite relatable to read.

Thanks for sharing.

Elise's arrogance and reluctance to genuflect irritates her family, especially the older generation. At least the dad's cousin didn't omit them due to Elise's attitude. I feel that the elder respected Elise to a point, but not enough to her entirely. And definitely, Elise needs an attitude adjustment moving forward with regards to conflicts.

Thanks so much for visiting and leaving your thoughts. I appreciate it and your support. Take care.

I guess she is just paranoid about something.

It’s my pleasure.

Great fiction! Love the emotion ❤️

Hello @wandrnrose7. I'm pleased you liked the energy of the sisters as they dine and discuss inheritance. As my mom always told us siblings, "be nice to all elder family. You never know who will be generous in the end." I used to think that all I had to do was to be nice. But later discovered it takes a bit more.

Thanks for your visit and lovely compliment for my story. I appreciate it and your engagement. Take care and have a nice rest of your week.

!LADY

Yes, you're correct. It does take more! Thank you.
