Have you heard of Release That Witch? 🤔 I recently found out that it already has an anime adaptation! Yes, a donghua (that’s what Chinese animation is called) based on the manhua (Chinese comic) and, in turn, on the web novel that was released between 2016 and 2019, known by its original Chinese name as "Fangkai Nage Nuwu" (放开那个女巫).
I had read the novel a while ago (in translation, of course, because my Chinese doesn’t go beyond “ni hao”), and then I followed several chapters of the manhua. So, when a friend told me the animated version was airing, I was eager to watch it. 😄
The Story, in a Nutshell
The protagonist, an atheist engineer from the modern world, dies without knowing how and wakes up in another world... inside the body of a prince in disgrace 😱. The funny thing is that this prince had just died poisoned by his dangerous older sister (definitely a dysfunctional family, medieval version).
From that moment on, the new “prince” has to survive, build his own power, and face a court full of intrigue, while trying to apply his scientific knowledge to improve a world that still burns witches. Yes, superstition and witch hunts are still very much alive. Only this time… the witches are real! 🔮
The Donghua: Respectful and Promising
I was afraid it would be like other anime, where “creative licenses” end up being creative crimes. But no, so far (two episodes in), the donghua stays true to the original story and adds new perspectives and narrative variations but without destroying its essence.
Fingers crossed it stays that way 🤞.
And by the way, did I mention the soundtrack? 🎶 Imagine epic Celtic-style choirs… sung in Chinese! The result is as strange as it is charming: a mix between a “Viking invasion” and an “Oriental mystery.”

Why is it worth it?
Because this story combines science, strategy, politics, and a dash of magic with common sense. There are no impossible superpowers or crazy plot twists, just an ingenious guy trying to build a civilization almost from scratch, transform the social order, modernize production, be the father of the industrial revolution and labor rights… all while dodging his murderous brothers, attacks by mysterious mutated animals and a very controlling and scheming church 😅.
If you're looking for a story that blends humor, social commentary, intrigue, and progress, give it a try. It's not a Japanese anime, but this Chinese donghua might surprise you (in a good way).

‘Libera a esa bruja’: cuando el isekai chino sorprende (y no decepciona) 🧙♀️✨
¿Has escuchado hablar de Libera a esa bruja —o Release That Witch si prefieres el inglés—? 🤔
Hace poco me enteré de que ¡ya tiene su adaptación animada! Sí, un donghua (así se llama a la animación china) basado en el manhua (cómic chino) y, a su vez, en la novela web que vio la luz entre 2016 y 2019, conocido por sus nombres originales en chino como "Fangkai Nage Nuwu" (放开那个女巫).
Yo había leído la novela hace un tiempo (en traducción, claro, porque mi chino no pasa del “ni hao”), y después seguí varios capítulos del manhua. Así que, cuando un amigo me contó que se estaba emitiendo la versión animada, tuve ganas de verla. 😄
La historia, en pocas palabras
El protagonista, un ingeniero ateo del mundo moderno, muere sin saber cómo y despierta en otro mundo... dentro del cuerpo de un príncipe en desgracia 😱. Lo gracioso es que este príncipe acababa de morir envenenado por su peligrosa hermana mayor (definitivamente, tenemos una familia disfuncional, versión medieval).
Desde ese momento, el nuevo “príncipe” tiene que sobrevivir, construir su propio poder y enfrentarse a una corte llena de intrigas, mientras intenta aplicar sus conocimientos científicos para mejorar un mundo que todavía quema brujas. Sí, está plenamente vigente la superstición y la persecución de brujas. Solo que, esta vez… ¡Las brujas son reales! 🔮
El donghua: respetuoso y prometedor
Temía que pasara lo que ha sucedido en otros casos, en donde las “licencias creativas” terminan siendo crímenes creativos. Pero no, hasta ahora (van dos episodios), el donghua se mantiene fiel a la historia original y suma nuevos puntos de vista y variaciones de narrativa, pero sin destruir la esencia.
Cruzo los dedos para que siga así 🤞.

Y por cierto, ¿mencioné la banda sonora? 🎶 Imagina coros épicos de estilo celta… ¡Cantados en chino! El resultado es tan raro como encantador: una mezcla entre “invasión vikinga” y “misterio oriental”.

¿Por qué vale la pena?
Porque esta historia combina ciencia, estrategia, política y una pizca de magia con sentido común. No hay superpoderes imposibles ni trucos locos de guion; solo un tipo ingenioso que intenta construir una civilización casi desde cero, transformar el orden social, modernizar la producción, ser el padre de la revolución industrial y de los derechos laborales… mientras esquiva a sus hermanos asesinos, ataques de animales mutados misteriosos y a una iglesia controladora e intrigante 😅.
Si buscas una historia que mezcle humor, crítica social, intriga y progreso, dale una oportunidad. No será un animé japonés, pero este donghua chino te puede sorprender —y de buena manera—.
