What would we be without science? Every day, new milestones are reached with the evolution and advancement of technology and science, which often go hand in hand, whether in the production of information, research, or testing. In all sectors, health, food, or infrastructure, science is essential for progress. And horizons that once seemed unattainable are now increasingly closer. But has science evolved to the point of also causing harm?
One of the things I admire most about our current stage is precisely technological evolution. Equipment, electronic devices, cell phones, and computing are almost divine compared to what humans were 300 years ago. If we look more closely: how much have we evolved in the last two or three decades? Progress is accelerating, and we are truly privileged for that. However, one thing is certain: there is only evolution where there is profit. There is only sophistication where there is profitability. Science and technology seem chained to revenue.
I am not sure if the point we are at, with so much help from technology, really has clear negative effects. Health benefits, our comfort increases every day, and even with social inequalities, humanity is striding toward a higher level of quality of life. But the question remains: could this enhanced progress also have been distributed in environmental and social aspects?
You see, what we have today seemed like a surreal dream years ago. Cell phones with processing power equivalent to computers, autonomous cars, artificial intelligence, among others. But why don't we still have significant progress against pollution? Or against diseases that drive the pharmaceutical industry? Is it really that we haven't yet reached a technological level capable of solving these problems, or is it simply not the most profitable path?
The environment is being destroyed by consumption that, incidentally, is largely generated by the very advancement of science and technology. The planet is crying out for help, and little is being done. If protecting the environment were profitable, wouldn't we have found a solution by now? As for diseases, it is undeniable that medicine has evolved greatly. Today, almost all of them have adequate treatment and many lives are saved. But is it more viable (and profitable) to maintain treatments with expensive drugs than to actually invest in prevention and definitive cures? Perhaps I am exaggerating, but selling drugs seems more profitable than preventing diseases. And wouldn't science, with all its current potential, already have the capacity to solve this, if there were real interest?
In my view, the greatest drawback of technological advancement is that it is almost always driven by profit and revenue. Science is indeed one of humanity's greatest assets, but perhaps it should be used more ethically and for the common good, not just for economic interests. We know, however, that funding comes from those with the greatest interest. The question remains: will we ever have these solutions?

O que seríamos sem a ciência? A cada dia, novos marcos são alcançados com a evolução e o avanço da tecnologia e da ciência, que muitas vezes andam lado a lado, seja na produção de informações, pesquisas ou testes. Em todos os setores, saúde, alimentação ou infraestrutura, a ciência é primordial para o progresso. E horizontes que antes pareciam inalcançáveis estão, agora, cada vez mais próximos. Mas será que, em algum momento, a ciência evoluiu a ponto de também trazer prejuízos?
Uma das coisas que mais admiro em nosso atual estágio é justamente a evolução tecnológica. Equipamentos, aparelhos eletrônicos, celulares e a computação são quase divinos se comparados ao que o ser humano era há 300 anos. Se olharmos mais de perto: quanto não evoluímos nas últimas duas ou três décadas? O progresso é cada vez mais veloz, e somos realmente privilegiados por isso. Porém, uma coisa é certa: só há evolução onde há lucro. Só existe sofisticação onde há rentabilidade. A ciência e a tecnologia parecem acorrentadas ao faturamento.
Não sei ao certo se o ponto em que estamos, com tanto auxílio da tecnologia, realmente tem efeitos negativos claros. A saúde se beneficia, nosso conforto aumenta a cada dia e, mesmo com desigualdades sociais, a humanidade caminha a passos largos para um patamar mais elevado de qualidade de vida. Mas fica a questão: será que esse avanço tão potencializado não poderia ter sido também distribuído em aspectos ambientais e sociais?
Veja bem, o que temos hoje parecia um sonho surreal anos atrás. Celulares com capacidade de processamento equivalente à de computadores, carros autônomos, inteligência artificial, entre outros. Mas por que ainda não temos um avanço expressivo contra a poluição? Ou contra doenças que movem a indústria farmacêutica? Será mesmo que ainda não atingimos um nível tecnológico capaz de resolver esses problemas ou simplesmente não é o caminho mais lucrativo?
O meio ambiente está sendo destruído por um consumo que, diga-se de passagem, é gerado em grande parte pelo próprio avanço da ciência e da tecnologia. O planeta grita por socorro, e pouco é feito. Se proteger o meio ambiente fosse rentável, será que já não teríamos encontrado uma solução? Quanto às doenças, é inegável que a medicina evoluiu muito. Hoje, quase todas têm tratamento adequado e muitas vidas são salvas. Mas será que é mais viável (e lucrativo) manter tratamentos com medicamentos caros do que, de fato, investir na prevenção e na cura definitiva? Talvez eu esteja exagerando, mas vender remédios parece mais lucrativo do que prevenir doenças. E será que a ciência, com todo seu potencial atual, já não teria capacidade de resolver isso, se houvesse real interesse?
Na minha visão, o maior prejuízo do avanço tecnológico é o direcionamento quase sempre atrelado ao lucro e ao faturamento. A ciência é, sim, um dos maiores patrimônios da humanidade, mas talvez devesse ser usada de forma mais ética e voltada ao bem comum, não apenas ao interesse econômico. Sabemos, no entanto, que os financiamentos vêm de onde estão os maiores interessados. Resta a dúvida: será que um dia teremos essas soluções?
