The second edition of the engagement is so good and timely. One of the great challenges we have in our dear country Nigeria lies in the borders of education. It's commonly said and believed that education is the bedrock of any society. I would like to say that any society without education is doomed and soon there won't be any posterity.
Any developed nation you see today is a product of good educational system. Education has a lot to give for national growth and development. I could remember vividly when I was conducting a research for my first degree, I tried to compare the performance of students to the availability of educational materials and sound teachers. This is synonymous to what I am about to drop as my input on this subject for this edition.
Whose fault or who is to be blame for poor performance in education? Could it be students or teachers? I would like to draw balance between the two. Generally, the poor performance of students could either be attributed to students or teachers and other factors. The role of teachers is very important in developing and moulding students for better tomorrow.
Teachers sometimes are responsible for the poor performance of students in schools. It will interest you to note that some of the teachers aren't properly knowledgeable about their discipline as a result, it affects their productivity and efficiency in quality delivery of lessons to students. I had the opportunity to teach during a two year programme called Npower in my country. There's this teacher that doesn't come to school regularly and hardly enter the class to teach because she doesn't have good mastery of subject content. Hmmm the funny thing is that she collects one of the fatest salary but poor delivery of lessons. She has poor grammatical expression. Imagine how would the performance of students be? Definitely it would be very poor.
Some teachers lack the use of good methodology while teaching. This makes it difficult for their students to assimilate whatever that is taught. Method of teaching is very important and this will enhance good performance of students. Teaching supposed to be learner's centred and not teacher's centre as many do today which results to poor performance of students.
Lack of instructional materials too by the teachers affects the performance of students. How would you just be teaching students abstract things? Learning is better and effective when students see and align to what is taught in the class. Another factor that affects the performance of students could be the welfare package of the teachers. When a teacher is properly paid certainly he'll be motivated to teach very well. I noticed that most schools that pays succulent salary their teachers always give in their best.
On the other hand students too are to be blame for poor performance academically. There are students that don't like to read at all only when there's exams or test ahead of them. How do you expect such students to perform academically? It takes only the serious students to do valiantly in academics.
CONCLUSION
Both teachers and students are responsible for poor performance in academics today. It's not only teacher's fault.
