Throwback to mid-August 2016, when the kids were still small, and life felt a bit more hectic in the best way possible. We had an incredibly packed few days around the 15th that year, and the memories are as vivid as ever.
It all started with a night stroll through the magical streets of Bruges. If you've ever been there, you know the city comes alive in the evening, with the cobblestones glistening under the streetlights and the towering Belfry casting its golden glow. The mix of medieval charm and quiet evening ambiance made it a night to remember.
The very next day, we took the kids to the Antwerp Zoo, one of the oldest and most beautiful zoos in the world. Right outside, we couldn’t resist snapping a few pictures of that iconic Ferris wheel—because what’s a trip to the zoo without a little bit of fun and adventure towering over the city?
And then, to wrap up our little adventure, we headed to the Japanese Garden in Hasselt to celebrate Obon Matsuri. This festival is something we try to experience every year—a beautiful, serene moment to honor loved ones who’ve passed. The garden was as tranquil and picturesque as ever, with floating lanterns casting a warm glow on the water as the sun set.
Unfortunately, this year’s Obon fell on August 9th, and I was busy just walking 100 km, so we couldn’t make it. But looking back at these photos, it’s a reminder of those cherished moments when the kids were small, and we had the time and energy to pack so much into just a few days.
