Hello everyone! ๐ ๐ท
If we believe and follow the ancient calendars, the exorcism of winter will begin soon this year. And this post is a teaser of an event that will start on Saturday, called 'Pust' or 'Carnival' here, and last until Wednesday.
During this time, all the municipalities change power to Carnival King puppet, total anarchy sets in and the daily parties start, culminating on Tuesday, called Shrove Tuesday in Western countries, or Fat Tuesday, when doughnuts are baked here and pancakes are baked in other parts of the world because it's also World Pancake Day ๐
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday when the traditional fast begins, and the last day before the 40-day fasting period until Easter. It's perfect for feasts with fatty fried foods, the last chance for people to eat and be merry before a long fasting period. The exact date varies from year to year, depending on the date of Easter. This year it's early because Easter is also early, on the 31st of March.
All in all, it's one of the bigger parties here :)
It starts with a warning, a week or so before, that puppets are hung in the town and in all the villages to represent the so-called Carnival, which reigns for these few days, from Saturday to Wednesday. When it is all over, the elected mayor takes over again and the puppet is symbolically burnt at the stake.
As I mentioned, this is an ancient, tribal, expulsion of winter, a tradition dating back to pagan times, but Christianity has turned it into the last day of abundance, before the forty-day fast that lasts until Easter. I could even draw some parallels with Ramadan, but, no, this post is not intended to debate religions.
If you walk around the city, or any village in the valley, you can't help but notice that the Carnival is about to start, because puppets are hanging everywhere, in fact, it's always put up by the group that later performs in the Carnival procession. As these are dolls, although unpleasant to the eye, they have to be seen as dolls (without the NSFW warning).
At home, in Ilirska Bistrica, where the local carnival will take place next Sunday, at the roundabout, from Saturday onwards I am looking at this:
Kneลพak village
ล embije village
Vrbovo village
Dolnji Zemon village
Koseze village
Of course, I didn't go to all the villages to see how they hung the dolls, only a few of the closest ones :)
As you can see, not much effort went into making these dolls. They are deliberately ugly and disgusting, after all, new ones are made every year, because at the end of the carnival, on Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, they will be burned everywhere.
Here is another picture of these puppets from last year's carnival.
What is the atmosphere like at Carnival?
