Namaste!
Pruning is done not only to make the plants look well-groomed but also to promote their good growth, so this activity is also an important part of gardening. No matter how good fertilizer and water you give to your plants, if they are not pruned from time to time, you will clearly see a slowdown in their growth and there is a reason for this, which I am going to tell you about today.
This is one of my curry leaf plants, on whose thin and almost 3 feet long main stem you can see a lot of branches and leaves at the top. All these leaves are from the last season and most of them have started to dry and turn yellow. The pot of this plant is also of 12 inches size, which is a little small as per the growth of the roots of such a big plant. But since I do not want to make this plant bigger than this, I did not change its pot and cut its main stem at a certain height last season, after which dozens of new stems came out from this and it became denser than before.
Now it is time for new branches and leaves but since these old branches are still attached to the plant even after turning yellow, the entire nutrition of the plant is going to these dying leaves which will anyway dry up completely in some time. And since naturally the plants themselves drop their leaves only when they dry up completely. Therefore, we ourselves should keep pruning the plants so that their nutrition always reaches the right place and they flourish.
Like I have done this by carefully breaking all the yellowing branches of this plant, which you can understand by looking at the image above.
Similarly, about 1 week ago I pruned another curry leaf plant of mine, after which you can see how quickly new young leaves have appeared on it.
Because now the entire nutrition of the plant is going towards promoting new growth and not on saving the old dying leaves.
We all know a lot of things but mostly we don't know the real reasons behind. Now if you connect pruning of old branches and leaves with the nutrition and growth of the plant, then you will understand the importance of this simple activity. 🪴😊
