hahahaha... Mieliepap/mieliemeal is a "staple" amongst the poorer communities (throughout most of africa actually not just here in SA)... in fact, if I'm not mistaken there's no VAT (TAX) charged on buying & selling.
It's similar to polenta (Italy) or grits (America)... but made with white corn instead of yellow.
P.S. At a braai, we'll traditionally serve it with a tomato & onion gravy. A lot of Capetonians don't eat mieliepap either... but that's just because they don't know how to make good mieliepap
