Equipment used: Canon R5 + RF 15-35mm f/2.8 lens
Result: Proof that the universe occasionally knows how to flex its artistic muscles better than we do.
Sunsets. They're like nature’s way of saying, “Hey, you survived another day—here’s a masterpiece to remind you you’re alive.” But let’s be real, there are days when the almost every day part of sunsets feels like the cosmic equivalent of “close, but no cigar.” Between the mist, the rain, and those thick clouds that seem to have personal beef with golden hour, you start to wonder if sunsets are more of a rumor than a daily occurrence.
These shots, though, are a throwback to a few years ago—back when the sun and clouds had their act together. Tonight, by some miracle, I witnessed another sunset (spoiler alert: I almost cried). Those photos will have to wait until I download them tomorrow or Monday because apparently, I enjoy the suspense as much as I enjoy good lighting.
Why Sunsets Are the Ultimate Free Gift
Think about it: You didn’t work for this. You didn’t pay for it. You didn’t have to log into an app, watch a tutorial, or wait in line for it. It’s there, every single day (well, unless you live somewhere like Seattle in November—then it’s more of a myth). But when the clouds finally decide to chill out, sunsets are like a front-row seat to the greatest show on Earth. And all you have to do is look up—or in this case, point your Canon R5 at it like the world-class storyteller you are.
The Gear That Makes You Look Like a Genius
Let’s talk about the tools for a second: the Canon R5 paired with the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 lens. This combo is basically the Michael Jordan of photography setups. The R5 captures every hue in the sunset—orange, pink, that weird in-between purple that makes you question your ability to name colors—with a level of sharpness that’ll make your jaw drop. And the RF 15-35mm? It gives you those wide-angle compositions that scream, “Yes, this is my desktop wallpaper, thanks for asking!”
You might think it’s all about the camera, but spoiler alert: it’s not. It’s about being in the right place, at the right time, with just enough patience to wait for the clouds to finally get their lives together. You know, the hard stuff.
The Images: Proof the Universe Loves Us (Sometimes)
In the first photo, you’ve got that classic sun-kissing-the-horizon shot. It’s the kind of scene that makes you question why you ever wanted to leave your hometown to chase bigger things. The way the light dances across the water? Chef’s kiss.
The second shot? Oh, just your standard tree branches framing the sunset like they’re auditioning for a Hallmark card. And the third? Those clouds—textured, dramatic, unapologetically extra. It’s like they’re whispering, “Go ahead, make me your profile header.”
The last one is all about that golden reflection on the water. If you don’t feel a sudden urge to sip wine by a lakeside cabin after looking at it, are you even human?
Life Lessons From a Sunset
You don’t need to travel across the globe or spend $3,000 on a camera setup to appreciate sunsets. They’re a reminder that beauty is everywhere if you’re willing to stop scrolling Instagram long enough to notice. That being said, having pro-level gear doesn’t hurt. The Canon R5 and RF 15-35mm f/2.8 make sunsets look so good you could slap a motivational quote on them and sell them as posters. (“Chase the light. Unless you’re on the couch. Then maybe just appreciate it from the window.”)
Tomorrow, I’ll download tonight’s shots, and maybe I’ll even share them. Or maybe I’ll hoard them because sunsets are like little secrets you sometimes want to keep to yourself. Either way, don’t take them for granted. Back in my day (cue exaggerated Gen X dad voice), we didn’t have cameras that could handle ISO like the R5 does. We had to squint at disposable cameras and hope for the best.
Moral of the story? Get out there, look up, and shoot your shot—literally and figuratively. The sun will thank you with a wink. Or, you know, a perfectly lit horizon.
Go chase your sunset. 🎯
