¿Hasta dónde la lucha por la libertad de elección puede afectar a los otros?
¿Puede considerarse un logro legal, de la dignidad humana y de la libertad de ser, obtener el permiso para decidir cuándo finaliza mi existencia?
La habitación de al lado, la película de Pedro Almodóvar, nos llena de miles de dudas; y aunque es una historia sencilla sobre alguien que racionalmente ha decidido terminar con su existencia, la contraparte, que es testigo de este acto, pone sobre la mesa una serie de dudas que nos obligan a preguntarnos:
¿Hasta dónde debe llegar mi libertad, incluso, a la hora de decidir sobre terminar mi vida?
Almodóvar, genio…
Siempre he considerado a Almodóvar un genio en los planteamientos sociales.
Y aunque "La habitación de al lado" es un guion escrito por él, basado en la novela “Cuál es tu tormento” de Sigrid Nunez, no deja de tener como directriz los conflictos familiares, el sufrimiento que ocasionamos a otros y la capacidad de decidir sobre mí mismo, que todos los personajes de Almodóvar han mostrado a lo largo de toda su filmografía.
Recuerdo que cuando fui a ver la película "La piel que habito", salí del cine pensando que este director y escritor, ya había logrado un sitial dentro de la industria cinematográfica que le permitía narrar la historia que quisiera, aun a costa de aquel para quien el tema le golpeara demasiado.
Sus historias van desde lo surreal y lo complejo de las interrelaciones humanas, hasta los planteamientos del abandono y de la sexualidad explícita, que plantea sin pedirle permiso a nadie.
Posteriormente, nos ha ido dejando una serie de películas con historias más apacibles o controladas, pero con temas infinitamente controversiales como los que ha planteado desde la primera película que hizo.
Un testigo que me acompañe a morir
En la habitación de al lado, Ingrid y Martha, dos reporteras amigas desde hace muchos años, se reencuentran por circunstancias de la vida en Nueva York.
Durante unos meses viven juntas la terrible experiencia de la toma de decisión que hace Martha, una mujer distanciada de su única hija y que así misma se considera una madre muy imperfecta, de quitarse la vida por una enfermedad terminal que padece.
Ingrid, que se ha dedicado a las novelas de autoficción, nunca imaginó tener que acompañar a alguien a enfrentar la muerte; y de hecho, ella es incapaz de hacerlo y reconoce que es un tema que le incomoda, le inquieta y al que le teme.
Pero el afecto, la identificación femenina y las vivencias, permiten que Martha logre su cometido teniendo a Ingrid como testigo y compañía silenciosa en la habitación de al lado.
Ana Estrada Ugarte y su derecho a decidir
En abril del año 2024, Ana Estrada Ugarte, una peruana, logró su derecho fundamental a una muerte digna con el procedimiento médico de la eutanasia.
La ley o justicia de ese país, Perú, le reconoció su derecho a una muerte asistida.
Una historia que comenzó desde el año 2021, cuando el poder judicial aceptó el pedido de eutanasia para una mujer que sufría las consecuencias de una polimiositis, que es una enfermedad muscular incurable de tipo degenerativa.
En el artículo de saludconlupa.com del 30 de marzo del 2022, habla ella; y nos deja claro que el problema de una decisión de esta naturaleza, de tener una muerte digna, se trata de defender el derecho a decidir.
Pero es un tema tan vinculado con la muerte y todo lo que culturalmente implica, que es visto como algo completamente terrible y antinatural.
¿Será esto lo que nos sucede a la hora de hablar de la eutanasia, la muerte asistida o el suicidio asistido, que la idea de enfrentarnos a ella, incluso pensando en la de los demás, nos aterra?
Lo cierto es que tomar decisiones que se relacionen con el tiempo de vivir siempre va a dar de qué hablar para bien y para mal; porque son decisiones complejas y difíciles que afectan a todo un entorno.
El consenso social obliga a la preservación de la salud, inclusive con las leyes; pero existe la dignidad de los seres humanos que, para muchos, debe ser defendida a costa de mantenerse vivo con una existencia dolorosa o sin conciencia.
Respeto al crecimiento en #Hive
La habitación de al lado no solo es una excelente película con maravillosos intérpretes, atrayente fotografía, colores vibrantes, diálogos serenos y adultos, y una dirección digna de cualquier premio internacional.
Ella pone de relieve la capacidad de decidir que tiene un ser humano sobre su propia existencia, desvinculando el suicidio como acto desesperado y enfermizo, impulsivo, de acabar con la existencia para darle paso a una decisión racional.
En la iniciativa Films que inspiran 2da edición, propuesta por la comunidad de @holos-lotus, se esperan muchas lecciones de vida, muchas historias y recursos que nos puede haber dado una obra filmográfica en cualquier momento de nuestras vidas.

How far can the struggle for freedom of choice affect others?
Can it be considered a legal achievement, of human dignity and freedom of being, to obtain permission to decide when my existence ends?
The next door room, Pedro Almodovar's film, fills us with thousands of doubts; and although it is a simple story about someone who has rationally decided to end his existence, the counterpart, who is a witness of this act, puts on the table a series of doubts that force us to ask ourselves:
How far should my freedom go, even when deciding about ending my life?
Almodóvar, genius...
I have always considered Almodóvar a genius in social approaches.
And although “The next door room” is a screenplay written by him based on the novel “What is your torment” by Sigrid Nunez, it does not stop having as a guideline the family conflicts, the suffering we cause to others and the ability to decide about myself, which all Almodóvar's characters have shown throughout his filmography.
I remember when I went to see the film “The Skin I Live In”, I left the theater thinking that this director and writer had already achieved a place in the film industry that allowed him to tell the story he wanted, even at the expense of those for whom the subject matter hit him too hard.
His stories range from the surreal and the complex of human interrelationships, to the abandonment and explicit sexuality that he raises without asking anyone's permission.
Subsequently, he has left us with a series of films with more peaceful or controlled stories, but with infinitely controversial themes like the ones he has raised since the first film he made.
A witness to accompany me to death
In the next room, Ingrid and Martha, two reporters who have been friends for many years, meet again due to life circumstances in New York.
For a few months they live together through the terrible experience of Martha's decision to take her own life due to a terminal illness. Martha, a woman who is estranged from her only daughter and who considers herself a very imperfect mother, takes her own life.
Ingrid, who has devoted herself to autofiction novels, never imagined having to accompany someone to face death; in fact, she is incapable of doing so and recognizes that it is a subject that makes her uncomfortable, unsettles her and that she fears.
But affection, feminine identification and experiences allow Martha to achieve her goal with Ingrid as a witness and silent companion in the next room.
Ana Estrada Ugarte and her right to decide
In April 2024, Ana Estrada Ugarte, a Peruvian, achieved her fundamental right to a dignified death with the medical procedure of euthanasia.
The law or justice of that country, Peru, recognized her right to an assisted death.
A story that began in 2021, when the judiciary accepted the request for euthanasia for a woman suffering from the consequences of polymyositis, which is an incurable degenerative muscular disease.
In the article of saludconlupa.com of March 30, 2022, she speaks; and she makes it clear to us that the problem of a decision of this nature, to have a dignified death, is about defending the right to decide.
But it is an issue so linked to death and all that it culturally implies, that it is seen as something completely terrible and unnatural.
Is this what happens to us when we talk about euthanasia, assisted dying or assisted suicide, that the idea of facing it, even thinking about that of others, terrifies us?
The truth is that making decisions related to the time to live will always give us something to talk about, for better and for worse, because they are complex and difficult decisions that affect an entire environment.
Social consensus obliges the preservation of health, even with laws; but there is the dignity of human beings that, for many, must be defended at the cost of staying alive with a painful existence or without conscience.
Respect for Growth in #Hive
The Room Next Door is not only an excellent film with wonderful actors, attractive cinematography, vibrant colors, serene and adult dialogues, and a direction worthy of any international award.
It highlights the capacity of a human being to decide about his or her own existence, disassociating suicide as a desperate and unhealthy, impulsive act of ending one's existence to give way to a rational decision.
