Maybe it's because it's the end of February and it has been several months since we had real flowers blooming outdoors, but the aisles filled with artificial flowers look particularly cheerful to me right now!
I realized I had no idea where or how artificial flowers were made and went in search of some info for this post. There were a few videos on YouTube.
Artists design flowers, and metal molds are created to shape the petals and leaves.
The petals and leaves are cut from plastic or fabric and dyed or sometimes hand painted, then heated and embossed to give texture.
The petals, stems, and leaves are glued or wired together.
The largest producer of artificial flowers is China (Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu provinces). Flowers are exported worldwide.
India and Thailand are nown for handcrafted artificial flowers made from natural materials and Vietnam produces both hand-made and factory-made artificial flowers.
There is one generations old factory left in New York City that even makes custom flowers.
All photos are mine and were taken at Michael's Arts and Crafts store here in town.
