The Tamarind Tree That Haunted My Childhood | LOH #300

in Ladies of Hive6 days ago

Hello everyone today, how have you been? I am all okay now, it was hectic day. Other than that I want to share a story of my childhood, when I strongly believed that ghosts lived in old tamarind trees. So, since childhood I've disliked ghost stories even tried to avoid watching haunted movies/shows. So, there was a friend of mine who liked to tease me about it, and one day he forcefully wanted to tell us a story. Before the beginning of the story he claimed it's a real story. So, I knew he was trying to tell a scary story so that everyone would get scared.

He began to tell story, "The story begins with a huge tamarind tree beside a pond not very far from our home. Village people said ghost often pass their time there and they would come down to pick up young kids. At first, the ghost would call your name or pat on your shoulder, if you look back then it will take you with them. So, it's a warning if anyone ever calls you by your name and if you heard it from behind while passing that tree then you should never look back or answer. Because that's not a real human calling you. Many children disappeared when they passed that Tamarind tree at night."

As a child, that story was enough to scare me. One week later, it was evening time after playing with my friends, I was returning home. Moreover, I was already late for home. I didn't realize that it was getting dark and I have to pass that Tamarind tree in a while. So, in 1982, there were barely electricity in village and we didn't have street lights. It was not like we have in 2026. As there were barely any lights so, after a few minutes of walk, I kept my eyes around expecting something to come because I was scared. There was no house around that particular area. After some time, everything got quieter but I could still hear the sound of frogs.

While passing the tree suddenly, I heard something fall behind me. I thought the ghost had jumped from the tamarind tree to catch me. Without any delay or thinking, I had decided to run away. I didn't bother to look back or investigate. Later, I reached home huffing, because I was running without taking any break. My father saw me and he held my hand asking me about what happened. Then I told my father about it, he replied, "No need to worry, if the tamarind is ripe or there's a strong wind then tamarinds can fall from the trees." I still did not believe my father, because I knew what I had felt. Anyway, now I am over fifty, and I sometimes laugh remembering that night. Because I was too naive that I didn't believe my late-father. I think, children of new generation wouldn't understand this because of how frightening a dark village road can be. I still remember, how my mind used to be filled with ghost stories.

To be honest, I don't believe ghosts live in tamarind trees. But if I had to pass that same tree again at night and suddenly heard my name from behind…

Honestly, I am not sure I would look back!

Oh my god, ghost stories they always scared the hell out of me. It was not always like that, till I was 6 I was never fearful of darkness and ghosts, but once my cousin came over and she had this belief that darkness means ghosts live there and if you go there, they can do anything to you. From that day I was fearful of ghosts. Thank god you do not have that fear any more

That's exactly how it happens! We aren't born afraid of ghosts most of those fears come from stories we hear as children. Once that idea gets into your mind then every dark corner suddenly feels suspicious. 😄 I'm really glad we both left those fears behind. Thanks for sharing your story.

that's quite funny, I am glad that you survived it. Remind me of that Game of Thrones tree.

I have not seen the show yet, it's worth it?

Personally, I like ghost stories. I love to watch YouTube video accounts of CCTV and smartphone footage. I worked as a Night shift nurse for half my professional career and most gals thought I was crazy working the nights alone. I admit to doing a bit of ghost hunting hoping to photograph a full body apparition but never accomplished it.
When you're young we tend to have a healthy imagination I think it is meant as a part of our instinct for survival since our rational think has yet to mature when we're older.
I've also tasted candied Tamsrind pods a few times before, quite tasty.
Thanks for sharing @rayhanhiveman and don't forget to say "Hello" and introduce yourself when dropping by the LOH Discord,

Haha, working night shifts alone and still going ghost hunting takes a special kind of courage! 😄 I can imagine the stories you must have from those years. I also agree that our childhood imagination can make ordinary things feel mysterious and even a little scary. And now you’ve got me curious about those candied tamarind pods as I have never tried them but they sound delicious.

Thank you for sharing your experience and for the warm welcome. I have already introduced myself in the LOH Discord server. Maybe I'm too late to read your comment. Sorry, I was outside and I couldn't read the comments.
