I recently completed the Avatar - The Last Airbender series on Netflix. There was a big expectation on this series and I was waiting to watch it. It was released on the 22nd of February. Some of my friends who watched it gave a great review for this and I also saw some feedback on X saying that Aang was flying which was not the case in the cartoon series. But later after watching the series fully, I was very impressed and I'm very glad that they did not create a replica of the cartoon series and at the same time, they did not deviate from the storyline of the cartoon series.
I have to say that I enjoyed the series so much and I'm eagerly waiting for the next season to come. I'm not sure how many seasons they are planning to create but how they are going looks like it can be more seasons. To be very honest, I also had some goosebump moments while watching the series. I would like to give a full 5-star review to it and there is nothing that I felt was not good. Everything was very good. Let's continue with the article and I would like to go into details of what I enjoyed.
The character selection
I felt that the character selection was brilliant. Aang gave me the exact feeling of what we had in the cartoon series. They replicated Sokka as it is and I think even the voice was also matching the best. They made Katara a bit chubby one but I liked that character selection too. There is no doubt that they had planned it very well. They have handpicked the characters. I initially thought Zuko was not a great choice because the face was different. In the cartoon series, the face was narrow and the character's faces in the series was round but apart from that I did not see any other difference. It was amazing and I got used to this Zuko now. Firelord Ozai was a perfect fit.
I have to say that I had a huge expectation only on the Iroh character but this one did not impress me well. For some reason, I feel that he looks like a very serious character and not like a wise one. The voice modulations could have been a little better but I'm also getting used to that and I wouldn't complain much. Maybe in the new seasons there will be more weightage given to that character. That's what I feel.
Animation and screen presence
I think they have done an amazing job with the animation. I guess I will be watching this again with a big screen later. I'm very much excited about what ba-sing-se would look like. The current locations themselves were nice and amusing. I think they did a beautiful job in animations as well. The screen presence was very good for the characters. They were able to show how the characters were slowly growing along the show. Katara learned the skills faster and was able to do bigger fights and Sokka also improved his fighting skills.
I noticed that the tattoo on the forehead of Aang is not just a tattoo. They have also added some details to it. The way the tattoo glows is also looking very good.
Overall review
As I mentioned earlier, I'm very happy with the output of the series. I would say this is 100 times better than what we had in the movie. The movie was a failure but this Netflix series is of high quality. There are a few scenes in the Avatar Cartoon series that impressed us so much. Those scenes are either missing or maybe it would be given to us in a different flavor. Otherwise, it was all excellent. One thing that I noticed was that the makers of this Netflix series know very well that the audience would not only be the new people watching this series but also some old folks who enjoyed watching the cartoon series. So they can convince both the crowd and give the scenes a new flavor completely without disturbing the core story of the series. This is something I love.
I'm now eagerly waiting for the new seasons to come and I want to see the other interesting characters we have in the cartoon series. If it is going to take some time, I think I will start watching the cartoon series once again until then to quench my thirst.
