Hola, buenos días a todos los integrantes de la comunidad Home Solutions. No es mi primer contenido en su casita, pero sí es el primero que señala una solución para algún problema del hogar. Y no es que no tenga a diario cientos de problemas en los que debo implementar ingenio y creatividad, sino que o se me olvida registrarlos, o las soluciones son un poco descabelladas como para recomendarlas, jajaja.

Pero ayer me vi por enésima vez en la incómoda situación de instalar yo misma la bombona de gas porque se terminó la anterior justo en medio de la preparación del almuerzo. Por eso aproveché la oportunidad para contarles un poco del proceso, y lo que he terminado haciendo cuando no me queda más remedio que abordar el asunto.

But yesterday I found myself for the umpteenth time in the uncomfortable situation of installing the gas cylinder myself because the previous one ran out right in the middle of preparing lunch. So I took the opportunity to tell you a bit about the process, and what I have ended up doing when I have no choice but to tackle the issue.

Como todos deben saber, muchos años atrás quienes se encargaban de instalar las bombonas de gas eran los propios técnicos que venían en el camión de servicios cuando hacíamos el pedido de gas. Hoy en día eso no existe, al menos no por aquí, por lo que hay que comprar las bombonas donde se pueda, y las instalamos nosotros mismos en la casa. Tiempo atrás se encargaba mi hijo de hacerlo, luego mi hija, ahora yo.

El problema es que la conexión del gas ya tiene muchos años y se ha ido desgastando la rosca con el pasar del tiempo, el sol, la lluvia, y el uso. Los aros para enroscar ya están un poco lisos y cuando se conecta a la boca de la bombona, filtra el gas. Aprendí con mi hijo que para saber si está filtrando gas, se coloca un poquito de agua jabonosa, y si salen burbujas, es porque el gas se está filtrando.

As you all should know, many years ago the people in charge of installing the gas cylinders were the technicians who came in the service truck when we ordered the gas. Nowadays that doesn't exist, at least not around here, so we have to buy the cylinders wherever we can, and we install them ourselves at home. In the past, my son used to do it, then my daughter, and now I do it.

The problem is that the gas connection is already many years old and the thread has worn out with time, sun, rain, and use. The threaded rings are already a little slick and when it connects to the mouth of the cylinder, it leaks the gas. I learned from my son that to know if it is leaking gas, you put a little bit of soapy water, and if bubbles come out, it is because the gas is leaking.

Un plomero que venía a hacer los trabajos en la casa, tuvo la oportunidad de ser quien conectó una vez la bombona de gas, y me enseñó que para evitar que filtrara el gas, le colocara teflón en la rosca, igual que en las conexiones de agua, y de esa manera al enroscar, el gas no se filtra.

A plumber who came to do the work in the house, had the opportunity to be the one who once connected the gas cylinder, and he taught me that to prevent the gas from leaking, I put Teflon on the thread, as in the water connections, and that way when screwing, the gas does not leak.

Desde ese momento, mis herramientas para instalar bombonas de gas son una llave ajustable, y teflón. Ayer agradecí a Dios que ni estaba lloviendo ni aún había salido un sol tan fuerte, porque ese trabajo es delicado y necesita paciencia y concentración para que quede bien. Aun así, en las dos primeras oportunidades no obtuve buenos resultados porque ya la rosca está muy desgastada.

From that moment on, my tools to install gas cylinders are an adjustable wrench and Teflon. Yesterday I thanked God that it wasn't raining and that the sun wasn't too strong yet, because that job is delicate and needs patience and concentration to get it right. Even so, the first two times I did not get good results because the thread is already very worn.

Como pueden ver en la imagen, al colocar el agua jabonosa, salió hasta espuma. La filtración de gas era extrema, por lo que cerré de inmediato la válvula, y comencé desde cero:

Paso 1, retirar el teflón anterior de la rosca; paso 2, enrollar el teflón cuidando que no se doble para que las ranuras de la rosca queden bien cubiertas; paso 3, colocar la rosca en la boca de la bombona de gas; y, paso 4, enroscar cuidadosamente con la llave ajustable hasta que quede bien ajustada la rosca en la bombona.

Step 1, remove the previous Teflon from the thread; step 2, roll the Teflon taking care not to bend it so that the grooves of the thread are well covered; step 3, place the thread in the mouth of the gas cylinder; and, step 4, screw carefully with the adjustable wrench until the thread is well adjusted in the cylinder.

Finalmente, abrí la válvula de la bombona, coloqué agua jabonosa en la conexión, y no salieron burbujas, lo que me indicaba que había quedado bien sellada. Este tipo de soluciones en el hogar no dejan de ser peligrosas, por lo que hay que ser muy cuidadosos y cerrar muy bien el fluido de gas antes de iniciar el trabajo, no fumar, ni encender nada con fuego cerca.

Finally, I opened the cylinder valve, put soapy water on the connection, and no bubbles came out, which indicated that it was well sealed. This type of solutions in the home are still dangerous, so you have to be very careful and close the gas fluid very well before starting the work, do not smoke or light anything with fire nearby.
