Thank you Starlings for the spring grub clean

We had the back garden mowed this morning, and afterwards I went to put some trash out the back where we store our wheelie bins.

I opened the back door and saw a couple of birdies, so slowly I put down the black bag and ran inside to grab my phone!

This is what I saw ...

and at the back wall I saw ...

So in total there were three starlings.

I was sure they would have pissed off before I came back with my phone and camera. So was pleasantly surprised that they were still here.

*The pictures in this post were all taken today on April 27th 2025.

I was thinking oh these will make for a cracking post about Starlings in Feathered Friends community!

I spy dinner!

As I said the grass was mowed in the morning so the grass had been disturbed!

Good news for the starlings as they went looking for some dinner!

Starlings ~ Friend or Foe?

Some people don't like starlings anywhere near their gardens.

I love them, of course I love a murmur of starlings but I like them in a garden because they are like your own free pest control service!

On the prowl

This one seemed to be stalking something...

image.png

They eat gypsy moths and caterpillars, which are an invasive pest. The moths destroy trees and vegetation.

These are common starlings. They were one of the first birds as a child I could confidently recognise.

Magpies, mallard ducks, swans and starlings were the ones I knew when I was a wee nipper.

This post though, is an entry for this week's Feathered Friends - Show Me A Photo Contest Round 216 hosted by the wonderful @nelinoeva in the fantastic Feathered Friends community on Hive.

And I shall pick this one for the entry

Speckled starlings
In the UK we don't really have hundreds of colourful birds like you do elsewhere, so the speckling on starlings really grabbed my attention.

So this one shows that speckle and I will choose this for the entry picture.

What do you think? Was that your favourite?

Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your day!

I have never seen a starling and recognize very few birds. When I was a little girl and we used to travel to my grandmother's country house, she had a yard where many birds of all colors and sizes would arrive. In the afternoon they would make an impressive noise and I was very scared to leave the house. hahaha. But I did have several parakeets that talked. Big bird hug, Ed!

Nice having those free pest control service at your back yard. They will do the job well I suppose

I go with the one you choose. I hope these starlings would visit my garden and help me with the caterpillar😌😬

I can understand that, because sometimes some of the pest predators is not really loved by the people. Beautiful bird Ed, I would love to see birds also around my house.

I love starlings and their ability to mimic different sounds. Always fun to pass by a tree and to hear the whisle. Their murmur is awesome and mesmerizing.
Wonderful images!

Cool, never seen a speckled one before. They sure eat up the bugs and that is a good thing! Here in the US there are many different types that have evolved, some very pretty. Looks like the weather is getting warmer finally?
