Chapitre 14 – La Flamme Creuse

Chapter 14 – The Hollow Flame

The icy wind of the High Plateaus lashed at their faces as the trio emerged from the tunnels of Ervastia. Behind them, the city of the Archives still smoldered in silence, like a warning to all who dared to seek the truth. Li-Mei clutched the ancient scroll against her chest as though it were a beating heart. The Song of the Five Seals echoed in her thoughts, and the glyphs hidden in its margins seemed to vibrate through the heavy cloth that protected them.

Gabriel kept his eyes fixed on the horizon. He barely spoke. Since the archivist’s dying words—“You are not who you think you are”—something had cracked deep within him. Those words had struck harder than any blade.

Théo was even quieter than usual. He walked a few paces behind, his gaze distant, his steps hesitant. Suspicion had begun to seep into the cracks of their fellowship.

The coordinates hidden within the glyphs led to a place erased from all records: The Hollow Flame. According to the ancient verses, it was neither a city nor a mountain—but a rift, somewhere between the desert of Kahr’Aran and the Frozen Northern Peaks, where ancient maps remained deliberately blank. A place where, it was said, light itself died within the stone. A forbidden place.

After days of harsh travel through snow and sand, they found it: a vast crater nestled in a cracked valley, older than the kingdoms themselves. No animals roamed. No plants grew. The ground was black, glassy, fractured like cooled magma.

Without a word, they descended.

The deeper they went, the more light twisted unnaturally. Even Li-Mei’s enchanted torch flickered with an eerie, bluish flame. The silence wasn’t empty—it was expectant.

At the bottom, they discovered a vast amphitheater of black stone, circular and etched with symbols older than any known tongue. At its center hovered a fractured crystal sphere. Inside it danced a flame—not warm, but sentient. Alive.

“This,” whispered Li-Mei, “is what the Song protected. The Flame of Origin. The one that sees but is never seen.”

The moment her eyes met the sphere, a voice echoed in all their minds—not spoken, but branded into thought:

“You are too late. The final Pact is already broken.”

From the walls emerged shadows. Not living creatures, but memories. Fragments of regret, given form. They came with familiar faces—of the dead, the betrayed, the forgotten.

Gabriel saw his brother, fallen in battle, staring at him with eyes full of blame.

Li-Mei saw her mother, consumed by flames, screaming her name.

Théo collapsed to his knees.

Before him stood a hooded figure holding a sigil Gabriel instantly recognized: the medallion of the High Ashes Council.

Truth struck like lightning.

Théo had been a sleeper agent—raised by the Order, trained to observe, perhaps to betray when the time was right. Had he truly strayed from his mission? Or had he lied to himself all along?

Gabriel drew his sword, his voice low and strained.

“Tell me it’s not true.”

Théo raised his hands—not to fight, but to point to the sphere.

“It doesn’t matter anymore. The Order is coming. They want this Flame. If we leave it, they win. If we take it… we’re cursed.”

They faced a choice.

Flee and allow the Order to reach the Flame.

Destroy it—and lose the last chance at uncovering the full truth.

Or bond with it—and pay the price.

Li-Mei stepped forward. Her eyes met Gabriel’s. She said nothing—but he understood. They were no longer mere travelers. They had become guardians of something no one should ever control—not even themselves.

She touched the sphere.

And the world shifted.
