What started with a few people in Delhi has now taken the whole nation by storm. Social Media has become so powerful that it's not sparing anyone. A month back this protest started with a hunger strike to fulfill certain Education related demands and to tackle the issues of educational corruption and unfair practices. It started in Delhi and now almost every big and small city of India is participating in it. Teachers, Parents, Students, Public figures all have come together to protest the changes in the Education system. Probably this will go down in history as one of the biggest revolution in the Education system in India.
The protest started with one issue of NEET paper leak and the after effects of it, but now every state is coming up with their own issues related to the Education system, like the fees hike, concerns about privatization, category quotas, scholarships structure, admission related issues, also something like the gap in education like what is being actually taught and what is needed to tackle the outside job world. People now are demanding that the education system should be decided with them because it is for them. In India every year so many students commit suicides because of the pressure these education systems create on them.
It's being led by the ones who are most impacted, but it does not limit there. Teachers are also coming up with their own concerns of low pay, being asked to do more with lesser resources. Everyone has started questioning their systems. It's like working towards a visionary Education process. People want to know that who decides that who will have access to quality education. The messages are spreading like fire and more and more people are joining in. Whatsapp, Insta, FB everywhere you only see about this. And I am surprised for a change there are no blocks to these messages, else in the past we have always seen that if things go against the government and their narratives then those messages get blocked.
Of course an educated society makes the foundation of the Country, and it's high time the old ways are challenged and what is relevant for the new generation is put in to practice. Education system has become crazy, be it for a Nursery student or a University student, everywhere there are challenges. It is crazy to think, that as soon as a child is born, the parent starts thinking about which school the child will go to and starts preparing for it not only financially but also pressurizing the little baby to speed up in talking and other activities. If the baby does not speak in the interview then probably the admission will be denied. I faced this with my own son, that too around 25 years back. The pressure and burden starts right from there and keeps going on all the way through.
Education is a big family problem, rather it should be a national problem. The coaching fees are sky rocketing. For a little baby to get admission in a school by the age of 2.5 to 3, the baby has to start with a play group for that at the age of 1.5 years. I hate this system, we are snatching away their most innocent times, and getting them in to the grind even before they can understand anything of it.
I am also hoping that this revolution is able to make not only the government but also every private education system accountable. Yes all of this is not coming easy and there will be sacrifices to be made but it is needed. The young generation is the strength of our Country and when they say we want change and a education system that is affordable, relevant and accountable then it is a work that needs to be done for a better future of the students.
